A hike to Duisitzkarsee in the Schladming Dachstein region of Austria is a journey into one of the most naturally preserved alpine landscapes you can experience. Nestled in the heart of the Roßtal Valley, this emerald-green mountain lake is surrounded by dense pine forests and towering peaks, creating a serene and almost untouched atmosphere. The trail, though moderate in difficulty, offers sweeping panoramic views and leads you through tranquil meadows and old alpine huts that echo the region's pastoral charm. The moment you arrive at the lake, you're greeted by a scene so pristine and peaceful, it feels like time has stood still. This is easily one of the most naturally preserved and breathtaking spots I have ever seen ,a hidden gem that truly captures the soul of the Austrian Alps.

A Hike Interrupted: A Hike from Gimmelwald to Tanzbödli

Our hike from the quiet mountain village of Gimmelwald toward Tanzbödli in the Bernese Oberland began with breathtaking views and the soft chime of cowbells in the alpine breeze. The trail gradually opened up to sweeping panoramas of Mürren perched above, Lauterbrunnen nestled deep in its U-shaped valley, and Wengen clinging to the slopes beyond, all framed by the towering cliffs and waterfalls that define this spectacular region. Gimmelwald itself felt like a scene from another time, with its wooden chalets, flower-draped balconies, and a pace of life untouched by the modern rush. But as we ascended toward Tanzbödli, I happened to check the weather forecast and was met with a sudden severe thunderstorm warning, which forced us to turn back. It’s never easy to cut a hike short, especially in a place so beautiful, but sometimes turning around is the wisest move, not as a defeat, but as a promise to return. After all, the mountains will wait.

The Windgällenhütte itself, perched high above the valley, is a beautiful blend of rustic charm and modern comfort. Its welcoming atmosphere is made even warmer by the hut warden and their kind family, whose hospitality leaves a lasting impression.
