A Colorful Alpine Tradition: Cattle Descent in Monbiel, Klosters

Every autumn in Monbiel, Klosters, the Alpabzug takes place, when cows, goats, and horses return from the summer pastures in the high Alps. The animals, often decorated with flowers, ribbons, and bells, make their way down to the valley in a joyful procession. This tradition has been part of Swiss alpine life for centuries, marking the end of the grazing season and giving thanks for a safe return. Today, it is not only important for local farmers but also a celebration of culture, bringing the community and visitors together to honor the bond between people, animals, and the mountains.

The hike to Bäregghütte in Grindelwald offers stunning views of the Ischmeer Glacier and the surrounding peaks. The hike to the Gleckstein Hütte above Grindelwald is one of Switzerland’s most iconic alpine experiences, usually done with an overnight stay at the hut, but equally rewarding as a long day hike. Perched at 2,317 meters on the slopes of the Wetterhorn, the hut was first built in 1895 by the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) and later expanded, making it one of the oldest SAC mountain huts in the Bernese Oberland. Along the way, the trail winds past cascading waterfalls, lush alpine meadows and sheer cliffs, before opening up to breathtaking views of the Upper Grindelwald Glacier. Wildlife encounters add to the magic, if lucky, you may spot the majestic alpine ibex grazing on the rugged slopes. An Unexpected Encounter with the Alpine Ibex

On the hike to the Gleckstein Hut above Grindelwald, I was gifted with an unforgettable sight, an alpine ibex standing proudly on the slopes with her young by her side. What began as a chance encounter soon turned into a heartwarming moment as I witnessed the tender affection between mother and child, nuzzling gently and moving gracefully in unison along the mountainside. With the Grindelwald valley and towering peaks as a backdrop, this rare encounter became a memory to cherish forever.
