🇬🇧Heritage with a tech soul
One need not think of Orson Welles and his famous monologue from The Third Man in front of the Prater wheel to associate this country with the watch industry. And yet, between the last part of the 19th century and the First World War, the main item of Swiss exports was not fine micromechanics, but embroidery, a specialty of the canton of St. Gallen and its capital city since the Middle Ages, when it was home to linen-weaving monks. The turning point came in the early Eighties of the nineteenth century: the ideas spread by the Arts and Crafts movement were flourishing and the best minds of the century were trying to figure out how to combine the industrial revolution’s mass production with artistic craftsmanship.

It was nominated a World Heritage Site: the Italian espresso, widely consumed also in Ticino and throughout Switzerland. Globally, more than three billion cups are sipped every day. The «tazzina» is also a feature, or rather a work of art, and is by no means short for «tazza» (cup), which instead has an ancient Arab origin: the «tassah», a clay vessel in which all things were served.

🇬🇧David Corbin, Dean of Geneva College in Texas, recounts that when Angelo Codevilla was appointed at Boston University, «it was as if they had hired Hannibal Lecter». Students and professors were not ready to confront the human candor and intellectual clarity of Codevilla, one of America’s most important intellectuals, who died in a car accident on September 20, 2021, at the age of 78.

Parliamo di arte a livelli alti, di arte «in potenza» nel bel paese del distretto di Riviera. Siamo nel capoluogo della Regione Tre Valli: intorno crescono piante inconsuete come la palma nana, tipica della macchia mediterranea che non ci si aspetta a trecento metri di altitudine, alla base di un comprensorio montano.

Nel giardino degli influencer
Immaginate un parco artistico straniante e coloratissimo, come una cittadella costruita dagli alieni nel mezzo di una placida campagna riarsa dal solleone, tra covoni di paglia e strade bianche e casali country-chic che si intuiscono oltre folte bordure di oleandri e mirti. Siamo nella Maremma più ricca, quella di Capalbio, buen retiro di aristocratici e intellettuali old money, di manager e boiardi, di finanzieri ed ereditieri. Nel 1979, una celebre coppia di artisti, Niki de Saint Phalle e Jean Tinguely, ottenne dagli illuminati proprietari della grande tenuta agricola di Garavicchio, i fratelli Carlo e Nicola Caracciolo, la concessione di un terreno di due ettari per realizzare le monumentali e stralunate fantasie di Niki. Iniziò così la progettazione del Giardino dei Tarocchi, nel mezzo dei poderi agricoli, su un dosso da cui si guarda il mare. L’ispirazione era sorta in Niki de Saint Phalle dopo aver visitato il Parque Guell di Barcellona, opera di Antoni Gaudí, e il Parco dei Mostri di Bomarzo, voluto nel ‘500 dal principe Pier Francesco Orsini.
