GUILD GmbH

GUILD GmbH During the past twenty years the international reputation of the Guild record label has won world-wide acceptance,

GUILD

The main Guild label itself has built an enviable universal reputation during almost half a century of existence, in seeking out young very gifted musicians and giving them the opportunity of making records, thus bringing their qualities to the widest possible audience. This policy has often gone hand in hand with recording unjustly neglected music for the first time, in the best sound that

modern technology can provide. Many of the resultant albums have won considerable plaudits from the press and media generally, and the vast range of music now available on the Guild label bears witness to this – in particular, the important ground-breaking series of recordings of music by Swiss composers and artists has won international acclaim – but the standard repertoire has not been ignored, with many outstanding issues of established masterpieces receiving wide praise. GUILD LIGHT MUSIC

Guild Light Music is now established as undoubtedly one of the world’s leading labels in restoring to the catalogues the cream of the vast repertoire of light music of the past – original recordings from the 1920s to the 1960s, with very many often conducted or performed by the composers themselves, or original recordings made by those artists who were most closely associated with such attractive, tuneful and admirably written music, the sole intention of which was to entertain. These original recordings, and there are now over 100 individual CDs in the series - which has been under the incomparable direction of one of the world’s specialists in this music, David Ades - have all been outstandingly well transferred to produce – often for the first time – the depth and quality of the original recordings so that this music, one time known and loved by millions all over the world, is now reaching new audiences which have previously been denied such treasures. GUILD HISTORICAL

As intimated in our introductory notes, the care and attention in both technical and musical content which have characterised every one of the award-winning releases in Guild’s fast-growing Historical Series of gramophone classics CD reissues has now made the label a byword for keen collectors the world over. From the incomparable riches of commercial recordings of the past, from the great heydays of the classical recording industry in the forty-years-and-more of the 33 1/3rpm long-playing era, to the release of previously unissued recordings, and long-forgotten broadcasts by some of the greatest musicians of the twentieth-century, from complete operas by legendary casts and conductors to the solo instrumental and vocal recitals, once long unavailable but now lovingly restored in the best possible sound, the Guild Historical series is now a comprehensive brand leader in its field.

GMCD 7423
Robert Matthew-Walker, born in London in 1939, is best-known as a leading critic and writer on music, of a wide range - covering classical, pop and rock music. But he is also a composer of an equally wide range of music, having studied with the French composer Darius Milhaud in Paris in 1962-63. This is the first CD to be devoted entirely to Robert Matthew-Walker's music, and opens with the impressive recent Violin Sonata No 2, recorded live at the Wigmore Hall in a magnificent performance by the exceptionally-gifted violinist Lisa Ueda, violin - 植田リサith the outstanding Italian pianist - a work described as '…one of those few new works I want to hear again very soon', '…very fine', and '…a triumph' by the critics. Also included is the major percussion work, Sinfonia Solemnis, the large-scale String Quartet No 1, and the astonishing Sonata Magna for organ, recorded at Cologne Cathedral. Two Shakespeare songs, with the composer at the piano, complete this important collection.

GMCD 7420
The music of the greatly-significant Swiss composer and conductor Fritz Brun has, in recent years, begun to take its rightful place as the legacy of one of the country's greatest composers of the 20th-century, thanks in large part to the outstanding series of recordings of his major orchestral works, together with a selection of his vocal concert music, on the Guild label. In this series, it is the fine interpretative quality of the conducting of Adriano that has played such an important role in this rehabilitation, and on this new release, we have Brun's magnificent Cello Concerto of 1947, together with a selection of his major vocal concert works. We are fortunate to have secured the services of the fine cellist Claudius Herrmannn, who gives a definitive performance of Brun's Cello Concerto, and the beautifully modulated also voice of Bernadett Fodor, together with the Bratislava Symphony Chorus and Orchestra. A release of major importance in Swiss music.

GHCD 2426
This latest release in the increasingly important series of Guild CDs devoted to the art of the great conductor Leopold Stokowski combines music by Russian masters of succeeding generations and a unique recording of music by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, who was a fellow-pupil of Stokowski at London's Royal College of Music in the 1890s. The three performances are all live recordings, and the Tchaikovsky Overture and Shostakovich Fifth Symphony, both with the London Symphony Orchestra have to be counted amongst the greatest and most impressive performances of these masterpieces ever captured through the medium of recording. The Vaughan Williams work for harp and strings was first performed in New York in 1939 and this is the only available recording of a Stokowski performance of this great work.

Vaughan Williams's Five Variants of "Dives and Lazarus" for Strings and Harp were given their first performance in New York in 1939, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult during the World's Fair. This performance also comes from New York, given by Leopold Stokowski and the CBS Radio Orchestra on 7 February 1954. Stokowski was a fellow student of Vaughan Williams at the Royal College of Music in the 1890s and a long-time champion of the composer's music. He conducted the first recording of RVW's 6th Symphony in 1949 and gave the US Premiere of the 9th in 1958. NOTE: This performance has now been released on a 'Guild Historical' CD coupled with works by Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. (GHCD 2426).

GHCD 2429
This 'Italian Spectacular' is a unique coupling of music by three Italian composers, all of whom were known personally to Toscanini. Most significant, in terms of large-scale integration, is the combination of the three magnificent 'Roman' symphonic pieces Ottorino Respighi composed, each of which is closely associated with Toscanini, who delivers spell-binding accounts of these works. Alfredo Catalani, and - of course - Giuseppe Verdi are best-known as operatic composers, and in each of the three orchestral selections from their operas, the combination of intensity and sensitivity of Toscanini's interpretations is heard afresh in these outstanding new Superfine Transfers, bringing a greater degree of fidelity to the sound than ever before.

From a sumptuous, newly transferred, all-Italian collection of Toscanini / NBC Symphony recordings, we hear the finale of Respighi's "Pines of Rome." (Guild GHCD 2429).

Ruggiero Ricci recorded Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto twice with Sir Malcolm Sargent. Their first recording was made in 1950 with the New Symphony Orchestra and has recently made its CD debut. Ricci gives a dazzling performance, as this 'sampler' from the end of the finale proves. It comes from Guild Historical GHCD 2425.

In 1945, Tommy Dorsey gave the World Premiere of Nathaniel Shilkret's Trombone Concerto with the New York City Symphony under Leopold Stokowski. The mainly teenage 'bobby-soxers' audience loved it, especially the 'Boogie-Woogie' finale, heard here from that complete first performance on a recent 'Guild Historical' release (GHCD 2424).

GMCD 7422 With Lance & Lute Music of the Swiss Guardsmen in France – Julian Behr lute
In terms of historical and musical significance, this release is one of the most important issues of 17th-century music for the lute to have been issued this century. The relationship between the Swiss Guardsmen and the French army is well-enough known, and the important duties the Swiss Guardsmen undertake in protecting the Pope are familiar to all.
But the music they composed and played for their own periods off-duty, and to entertain their French military colleagues centuries ago, has been is completely unknown to the general public, but owing to the assiduous investigation of the gifted and much-admired lutenist Julian Behr, we can - through his outstanding new recordings - experience this music at first hand after almost 400 years. It is a revelation, shedding fascinating light on a greatly significant aspect of music for this wonderfully expressive instrument.
