Claves is a Swiss record label, founded in 1968 in Thun and now based in Prilly, VD. A Swiss reference / An independant label

Claves is a Swiss record company, founded in 1968 in Thun by Marguerite Dütschler-Hüber. Since 2010, the musician and concert organizer Patrick Peikert is the director, succeeding Antonin Scherrer and Thierry Scherz. Dedicated to all genres of classical music, Claves likes

to give priority to young artists, rare repertoires, composers, performing, orchestras, Swiss festivals and historical reissues. The label's reputation was first established by two Swiss performers: the pianist, harpsichordist and conductor Jörg Ewald Dähler and the flutist Peter-Lukas Graf, who have made numerous recordings that are always in demand. Later, the label had the privilege of developing close relationships with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Teresa Berganza and Ernst Haefliger, among others. On the orchestral side, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra regularly record with Claves. In the 1980s, Claves enjoyed a very active partnership with Swiss conductor Marcello Viotti - a rising star in the world of conducting, a guest of the greatest opera houses such as the MET, La Scala, the Wiener Staatsoper, and La Fenice - which resulted in a series of premieres of Rossini's one-act operas and a complete set of Schubert's Symphonies. The Crommelynck Duo also marked this period with an important series of recordings covering almost the entire piano duet repertoire. The publishing of archives, in collaboration with Radio Télévision Suisse, is one of the strong points of the label, with a fabulous catalog: Haskil, Milstein, Michelangeli, Gilels, Kogan, Magaloff, Koopman, Francescati, Stern, Grumiaux or Van Cliburn. A constantly expanding catalog

In the last decade, the label has returned to its historical production rhythm with 16 to 18 recordings per year. Collaborations with Swiss ensembles have been strengthened, notably with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Musikollegium de Winterthur, the Berner Symphonieorchester, the Académie vocale de Suisse Romande, the Orchestre de chambre de Genève and the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. The repertoire has also been extended with a regular collaboration with the Swiss Chamber Soloists for the music of our time, the resumption of a jazz collection and an opening towards the popular repertoire of quality (La Chanson de Fribourg). As for young artists, the label continues to pursue intense collaborations, notably in collaboration with the Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad, with artists such as Timothy Ridout, Anastasia Kobekina, Andryi Dragan or Jean-Paul Gasparian. The catalog now includes nearly 600 recordings, all of which have been available since 2007 on the global online market (iTunes/Apple, Spotify, YouTube, Qobuz, etc.). Thanks to this, Claves' audience has grown impressively, with regular sales in over 180 countries. The physical market remains important, especially in Japan, Germany, France, Switzerland and the UK. New Album by Kathrin Schmidlin

"Woldemar Bargiel (1828 Berlin – 1897 Berlin), Clara Schumann’s maternal half-brother, provides a familial opening to this stylistically diverse double album. Bargiel studied at the Leipzig Conservatory under Ferdinand David, Niels W. Gade, and Ignaz Moscheles, later himself becoming a sought-after composition teacher. In addition to Leo Blech, his students at the Berlin Music Academy included the American Charles Martin Loeffler and the Swiss Paul Juon. The Drei Charakterstücke (Three Character Pieces) Op. 8 begin with a stormy pathos reminiscent of Robert Schumann as a model. The composer also dedicated the Fantasie Op. 5 and the Drei Fantasiestücke Op. 9 for piano to his half-sister Clara Schumann."

Kathrin Schmidlin, piano

Clara Schumann(-Wieck) (1819 Leipzig – 1896 Frankfurt am Main) was a widely travelled pianist – appointed as Imperial and Royal Chamber Virtuoso – composer, piano teacher, and editor; in this unique capacity, she embodied the most significant German female musician of the 19th century. Having begun her pianistic career as a child prodigy, Clara Josephine Wieck continued her path after marrying Robert Schumann in 1840. She subsequently appeared as a performer and composer under the name Clara Schumann, which is used in the following text.

With her virtuoso piano playing, the musician inspired around thirty composers to create works dedicated to her, although she incorporated only a few of them into her repertoire. She primarily championed the works of Bach, Beethoven, Robert Schumann, and Brahms; however, she regularly performed only a few piano pieces by her contemporaries Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Stephen Heller in her concerts. Lieber Freund by Isabel Gehweiler & Fiona Hengartner

Austa - Stringendo (Australia)

“This is a comparison review of two CDs of Romantic sonatas for piano and cello. They have much in common, which is why I’ve chosen to discuss them together, but also great differences. For brevity I’ll refer to them as ‘Weilerstein’ and ‘Gehweiler’, absolutely not diminishing the excellent work of both pianists! [..] Gehweiler adds sonatas by Julius Röntgen and Heinrich von Herzogenberg, both as Brahmsian as you can get without actually being Brahms. The four concise movements of Röntgen’s sonata op. 56 are particularly attractive: worth enjoying both as a listener and a performer. [..] If too much Brahms is never enough, Weilerstein will fit the bill, but for sheer beauty and sensitive emotional response, I can’t go past Gehweiler’s performance.” - Michael O’Loghlin, June 2025

by Opus Klassiek

" [..] Pípkov's oeuvre includes both romantic piano music and modernist works with a strong rhythmic character. His late compositions, including Ludus Rithmicus and Children's Joys, combine pedagogical objectives with artistic depth and also provide a unique insight into Bulgarian musical identity.[..] Thanks to these three CDs, we can closely follow Pípkov's ‘Bulgarian’ development in idiomatic-sounding performances. It is everything that Bulgarian music stands for, because the composer, pianist, conductor, orchestra, and recording location are as Bulgarian as can be. That does not say everything, but the fact that they are the chosen advocates of this special music says a lot." Aart van der Wal, June 2025
