Fabien Lafarge is a Captain at the United Nations, working for OGL - Observers Group in South Lebanon, since November 2014.
What brought you to Lebanon?
My military rank. As a Captain, I had the opportunity to work as a United Nations Military Observer. I chose UNTSO, which is in the Middle East since 1949.
Best cultural thing to do in Lebanon?
Historical places, like the ruins in Sour.
What is your favourite Arabic word? Why?
Habibi. Because this word means so different things, depend on which person it is told.
What do you miss from Switzerland?
Food and friends.
What is typically Lebanese for you?
People's generosity.
Arak or white wine? Haloumi or gruyère? Manoucheh or Rösti?
White wine (of course also the Lebanese one), with gruyere and Manoucheh (I LOVE Manoucheh)
Best place to be or thing to do to counter homesickness?
Going to the beach, enjoying the sun with a mint-lemon juice. But I heard about a place near Faraya which could be interesting.
Who is your favourite Swiss artist?
Jean Tinguely
In which situations are you most Swiss?
Ponctuality. But I can easily deal with the Lebanese "One minute", which can be much more longer that one minute.
What is your most Lebanese trait? What have you adopted from the Lebanese culture?
Smiling. I will bring back from Lebanon this way of being smiling and friendly to everyone. Except maybe once inside a car :)
Where is your place of inspiration? (In Lebanon, in Switzerland or anywhere else!)
The Mountains surrounding my little hometown in Switzerland.
Who is your artistic idol?
No one, but musicians in general.
Staying or going back ?
UN missions are limited. 12 Months. On November the 17th, I will leave. Coming back ? I will, for sure, to visit friends.
