They say history is written by the victors. Thus, in the current luxury watch landscape, mechanical calibres sit at the top of the horological Mount Olympus. Meanwhile, quartz-powered watches are often regarded as cheap, mass-produced, and lacking in artistry. But it wasn’t always this way.

More importantly, quartz may just be the technology of the future, as these days, it seems like everyone from indie upstarts to the luxe houses is looking to tap into this alternate energy.

That is why, today on , our very own Rhonda Riche explores the question: Can a quartz calibre be beautiful?

TAG Heuer has been at the forefront of mechanical, quartz, and connected timepieces. In the 1960s, TAG Heuer joined Project 99, which led to the development of one of the first automatic chronograph movements. In the 1970s, the brand was quick to adopt quartz technology for its signature divers. Heuer was among the four brands that collaborated on Project 99, which led to the development of one of the first automatic chronograph movements.

Then, in 2015, became one of the first and only luxury watchmakers to introduce a dedicated smartwatch line. The brand called it the Connected and based it on the iconic Carrera.

Today, we get the next evolution with the all-new Connected Calibre E5 (available in 45mm and 40mm), plus a new collaborative piece: the special edition 40mm Connected Calibre E5 New Balance.

A limited-edition timepiece, this 39mm, pebble-shaped, 18-karat yellow gold timepiece revives G*e Aulenti’s daring design from 1988 but gives it a more modern and elevated feel by outfitting the new Monterey with a Grand Feu enamel dial, a more refined crown, and replacing the original’s quartz-powered movement with an in-house automatic calibre.

Somehow, Watchonista’s extremely busy Editor-at-Large, Rhonda Riche, has found the time to release her second watch book of the year, and it’s about much more than just celebrity bling.

Released in May, her first book, The Wonderful World of Women’s Watches, was a long-overdue exploration of the heritage of women’s watches, a subject that has been relatively under-covered in the watch world.

Now, for her new book, Watch Spotting: The Collectors (ACC Art Books, 2025), she makes a strong pivot to a relatively over-reported topic: celebrities and their watch collections. However, this new book brings a freshness and intimacy to the subject of celebrities and their watches that only Rhonda Riche could provide.
