Where Did the Cheshire Siscat Come From?

As a child, I was mesmerized by the Cheshire Cat. He never gave answers — only questions that made you pause.

Years later, I realized I was missing her. The quiet one. The intuitive one. The cat who didn’t vanish, but arrived exactly when you needed her.

That’s how the idea of Cheshire Siscat was born — a symbol of intuition, quiet clarity, and deep presence.

She embodies what I’ve come to recognize through years in HR and coaching: Business intuition — the ability to sense what's unspoken, to read intention, to feel timing without needing a blueprint.

This cat isn’t just a metaphor. She’s a reminder that the softest signals often carry the deepest truth. To stay connected — to yourself, to others, to what’s happening beneath the surface.

She doesn’t offer answers — only insights that feel like something you’ve always known.

🐾 Things You Didn’t Know About the Cheshire Cat
1. 📌 18th century – The phrase “grin like a Cheshire cat” becomes popular in England.
2. 📌 Early 19th century – Cheshire cheese is occasionally molded with smiling cat faces.
3. 📌 1832 – Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) is born in Cheshire.
4. 📌 1865 – Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is published, and the world meets the enigmatic Cheshire Cat.

The British Shorthair — known for its sturdy build, round face, and famously chubby cheeks — is believed to have inspired the iconic cheese shop mascot, often depicted as a plump, smiling cat.

In 1865, the Cheshire Cat leapt from legend into literature, finding his way into Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. There, he became the most curious creature of all — wiser than the Mad Hatter, more mysterious than the Queen.

The Cat didn’t give answers, he made you think:
“If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.”

The Institute of Professional Supervision was originally founded to support practicing psychologists.
Over time, a new branch emerged: supervision for corporate psychologists. In other words, psychologists translate emotional health into business impact.

I saw this intersection firsthand in my role as a senior HR leader, supporting a tech company whose R&D center (70% of staff) was based in Kyiv. The HR people partners were doing outstanding work supporting teams through the crisis. But there was a cost: emotional exhaustion and invisible overload.
That’s when I brought in the Institute of Professional Supervision. Its head, Vladimir Mamko, took on regular supervision for the HR team, not as therapy, but as a framework for emotional sustainability.
Over a year of collaboration, he helped the team:
- Manage emotional surges,
- Avoid internalizing others’ stress,
- Maintain resilience while holding space for others.

We co-designed adaptations to bring clinical supervision tools into the business world, shaping a new, grounded methodology that worked for HR.

Today, it’s a smart tool for rebuilding performance by supporting HR, the people who keep teams strong.
