Identity is never as simple as a label. It shifts with the way we see ourselves, the spaces we occupy, and how we choose to be seen. Style becomes part of that language — a way of expressing who we are without having to explain it.

In a world where algorithms and trends increasingly dictate what we wear and how we see ourselves, who we truly are can be harder to pin down. We navigate a looks- and success-driven society where individuality is constantly being shaped, shared and repeated. An outfit can be copied from a Pinterest post, but can identity?

KAZAKHSTAN: A VISUAL DOCUMENT

Five weeks on the road through Central Asia.

In autumn 2025, Nuremberg- and Berlin-based editor and photographer Markus Eber spent five weeks travelling across Central Asia, moving through Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Starting at the Caspian Sea, he crossed the vast Kazakh steppe towards the Chinese border, continued through the mountains of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and followed the old Silk Road towards the Aral Sea.

“I was interested in how different eras intertwine” — ancient traditions, the Soviet legacy and the present day.
Travelling mostly by bus and train, Eber experienced the region slowly, covering huge distances and watching the landscape shift along the way.
What follows is not a definitive portrait of Central Asia, but a personal collection of images from five weeks on the road.

Shot by former London College of Fashion student Lukas Renlund and styled by Tommy Loeland, founder of Norwegian Troll Magazine, the series is all about faces, attitude and a little Nordic cool.

Keiichi Tanaami, the iconic Japanese pop artist who died in August 2024, left behind a wild world of psychedelic imagery, pop culture and surreal dreams, and a huge gap in the art world.

For more than six decades, Tanaami created work that defied explanation, imitation and, quite often, reality itself. Back in 2009, he spoke exclusively to ZOOT about his work and imagination.

Inspired by William Klein’s surreal 1966 satire Who Are You, Polly Magoo?, Julia Sarturi and Karol Moreira explore what it means to create for the silhouette rather than simply dress the body. Aluminium foil, graphic patterns, unusual accessories and exaggerated shapes turn unconventional materials into clothing, pushing fashion somewhere between construction, the absurd and the avant-garde.

Danna Löwenberg takes us behind the scenes of constructing the looks.

What happens when fashion stops behaving?
Inspired by William Klein’s surreal 1966 satire Who Are You, Polly Magoo?, Julia Sarturi and Karol Moreira explore what it means to create for the silhouette rather than simply dress the body. Aluminium foil, graphic patterns, unusual accessories and exaggerated shapes turn unconventional materials into clothing, pushing fashion somewhere between construction, the absurd and the avant-garde.
Clothes become objects. Materials become garments. Silhouettes become sculptural — and function takes a back seat.
A little absurd. A little futuristic. A Surrealist fashion fantasy.

A sensual beauty story by Bernd Grundmann: Scent, skin and summer, with a teasing side.

Oils of Love massage oils melt into the skin, scented with rose, ylang-ylang and tuberose. Rice steam inspires scented ice cubes, cold against hot skin. Flowers get dipped in dark, milk and white chocolate body paint, left to melt in the summer heat — and kissed off when the mood takes you. Plus two partners in crime: a lip balm and ni**le refresher. The reference is analogue. The result isn’t.

Inspired by the timeless beauty of silver gelatin printing, GELATIN SILVER turns darkroom nostalgia into saturated colour, sculptural silhouettes and reflective surfaces. Metallic fabrics shimmer against electric magentas, cobalt blues and radiant golds, while vinyl, Mylar and coloured light push the imagery somewhere more experimental.

“We developed a concept inspired more by the title Gelatin Silver than by the technical printing process itself. To represent the ‘gelatin’ aspect, we displayed our images on brightly coloured backgrounds and incorporated vinyl. For the ‘silver’ element, we used Mylar film foil, strobe lighting and coloured lighting gel filters to create reflective surfaces and dynamic bursts of colour.”
