What Machu Picchu looked like over 100 years ago.

In 1911, explorer Hiram Bingham was guided to Machu Picchu by local farmers. A year later, in 1912, his team began the first major clearing of the Inca ruins.

📸 These rare Hiram Bingham photos show the “Lost City of the Incas” still wrapped in jungle — slowly uncovered, stone by stone. From the mysterious Temple of the Three Windows to sweeping bird’s-eye views of the Urubamba Valley, these historic images reveal how the world first saw Machu Picchu emerge after centuries hidden in the Andes.

🏆 In 2007, Machu Picchu was named one of the New7Wonders of the World, chosen in a global campaign with over 100 million votes — a celebration of heritage and human genius.

❓ Looking at these historic photos, what amazes you more — the precision of Inca stonework, or the fact that this wonder survived centuries almost untouched?

In 1908, American explorer William Edgar Geil led a team along the Great Wall of China.

They took photos, wrote notes, and recorded the towers and ruins they saw.

A year later, he published The Great Wall of China (1909) — the first English book focused only on this Wonder of the World.

His work helped shape how the Wall was remembered in the West.

🏆 Today, the Great Wall is one of the New7Wonders of the World, chosen in a global campaign with over 100 million votes — a celebration of heritage, endurance, and human achievement.

In 1911, a Yale professor named Hiram Bingham was guided by local farmers high into the Peruvian Andes.

There, he saw stone terraces hidden in the clouds — Machu Picchu. A city the Spanish never found, and whose purpose remains a mystery.

Like the Pyramids of Egypt or Chichen Itza in Mexico, this was more than architecture. It was aligned with the sun, the stars, and the sacred mountains — the Inca believed stone itself carried life.

When Bingham brought news to the outside world, debates erupted: was it a royal estate, a fortress, or a sacred sanctuary? The Incas left no written record to explain it.

What they did leave were stones so precisely cut that not even a knife blade fits between them — a marvel that has survived earthquakes, centuries, and neglect.

Today, Machu Picchu is not just an Inca mystery, but a global treasure. In 2007, it was voted one of the New7Wonders of the World — chosen by people everywhere, a reminder that some mysteries are meant to endure.

Then vs Now: Machu Picchu’s Temple of the Three Windows

These three windows are still a mystery.
Many say they show the three Inca worlds:

🌑 Uku Pacha — the underworld
🌍 Kay Pacha — the world we live in
☀️ Hanan Pacha — the heavens above

🏆 In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New 7 Wonders of the World — with over 100 million votes worldwide.

”HOW THE NEW7WONDERS MOVEMENT ALL BEGAN”

Dear New7Wonders friend,

This is how the New7Wonders movement all began: In the 1990s, when I was working as a filmmaker and when technology switched from analog to digital, the Internet started to become a mass medium and I was looking for a reason to buy my first computer and to use the Internet’s true potential to reach everyone across our planet. So I started to reflect and search for a concept, for a word, a sentence which everyone on this planet could understand and recognize, and therefore would be inspired and encourage to interact with other people around the world. The ancient Greek concept of the 7 world wonders came to me as an idea that could just fit for this purpose.

So, in 1999, I decided to revive it, just like Pierre de Coubertin did in 1896 with another ancient Greek concept, the Olympic Games.

Therefore, in 2000 I started New7Wonders as a millennium project. For the first time in mankind’s history, a global democratic exercise, a worldwide voting campaign, was technically possible. The idea was simple and powerful: to ask the people of the world to choose and elect the new man-made seven wonders of the world, the rightful heirs of the ancient seven wonders. I called this simply the Official New 7 Wonders of the World – official because we wanted to recognise the ultimate authority and legitimacy granted to us by the people’s free choice and democratic will.
