From birth to 1 year, there are 4 decisive periods in baby's diet. The first is between 0 and 4-6 months. During this phase, baby will be fed exclusively with milk (breast or artificial).
This is the most suitable food for baby. It contains everything needed for his growth and development.
From the age of 4 months onwards, babies can start to diversify their diet by gradually introducing new foods in moderate quantities. The first foods commonly introduced are first age cereals, followed by vegetable purées and compotes.
It is best to start diversification with vegetables and end with fruits, but they must be cooked. For vegetables, we should first avoid foods with a very strong taste or whose colonic fermentation can be responsible for abdominal pain (peppers, salsify, cabbage, celery, peas, turnips, green leeks). Certain dried vegetables (lentils, chickpeas, dried beans) are not recommended before the age of 12 months. In some cases where breastfed babies refuse to change, don't panic: breast milk allows them to benefit from a wide variety of flavors through their mother's food and generally covers all their needs.
For bottle-fed babies, start by diluting 1 to 2 teaspoons of blended or jarred vegetables in one of the milk bottles, then gradually increase the quantities before offering the vegetables with a spoon.
From the age of 6 months, milk is no longer sufficient to cover all the needs of baby's growth: this is the time to start diversifying. It is compulsory. It is advisable to offer baby, until the age of 1 year, a maximum of different tastes and to quickly offer him a wide variety of tastes.
This diversification begins slowly, respecting baby's rhythm, tastes, mood, etc. It is useful to introduce only one food at a time, and to wait a few days before introducing a new one, in order to be able to determine the foods to which he is allergic. All foods will be pureed very smooth. In our next articles, we will look at the second phase in baby's diet.
