Dopo sei mesi e mezzo sulle Ande e dopo aver passato gli ultimi 70 giorni a oltre 3500 metri, abbiamo deciso che era decisamente ora di scendere. Abbiamo optato per l’amazzonia peruviana per tornare a vedere un po’ di verde che ci era troppo mancato e perchè la foce del Mekong in sudest asiatico ci era piaciuta tantissimo, così volevamo vedere com’era una zona simile ma dall’altro lato del mondo. I primi giorni il caldo è stato insopportabile, soprattutto perchè gli ultimi mesi li abbiamo passati col piumino addosso e da un giorno all’altro ci siamo ritrovati a pedalare in un bagno turco. Ora, inspiegabilmente, sembra cominciata in anticipo la stagione delle piogge e si vive un po’ meglio. Le piante sono diventate di un verde acceso e la frutta si trova letteralmente ovunque, basta allungare un braccio e raccogliere a bordo carreggiata. Stiamo seguendo una lunga strada tortuosa che serpeggia sul costato di una montagna, sotto di noi il fiume a Urubamba che seguiremo pedalando fino a Ivochote. Da lì la strada termina e proseguiremo di barca in barca fino ad entrare in Ecuador.
After six and a half months in the Andes, and having spent the last 70 days at over 3,500 meters, we decided it was definitely time to descend. We opted for the Peruvian Amazon to see some of the greenery we’d missed so much, and because we’d loved the mouth of the Mekong in Southeast Asia, so we wanted to see what a similar area was like on the other side of the world. The heat was unbearable for the first few days, especially since we’d spent the last few months in down jackets, and from one day to the next we found ourselves pedaling in a Turkish bath. Now, inexplicably, the rainy season seems to have begun early, and life is a little better. The plants have turned a bright green, and fruit is literally everywhere—you just have to reach out and pick it from the roadside. We’re following a long, winding road that snakes along the side of a mountain, with the Urubamba River below us, which we’ll follow as we pedal to Ivochote. From there the road ends and we will continue from boat to boat until we enter Ecuador.
