Since 2021, the market’s Food Loss and Waste Reduction and Organic Waste Recovery Program has been making a remarkable difference.

27/06/2025

The sixth session of the Recycle Organics webinar, Organic Waste Network and Educational Program, was an eye-opener, showcasing how some countries are turning trash into treasure by transforming waste into a source of income.
One of the speakers, Ms. Lais Ferreira dos Santos, Project Officer in the Solid Waste and Agroecology Team, Instituto Polis, shared how this process is being implemented in Brazil. She explained that Brazil has adopted a range of business models to manage organic waste more sustainably — from waste picker cooperatives and public home composting to private sector initiatives and public-private partnerships.
These models help create jobs, reduce pressure on landfills, and convert organic waste into valuable resources like compost and electricity through anaerobic digestion.
Could similar ideas work for Belize?

Topic of the Month: Recyclers in Action – Leading the Organic Waste Transformation

Recyclers play a vital but often overlooked role in organic waste management and reduction efforts. In this session, you'll learn how waste picker organizations are driving change across different regions. From Kenya, the Centre for Environment Justice and Development (CEJAD) will share their work supporting the creation and strengthening of waste picker associations.

Instituto Pólis from Brazil will share how they’re providing technical support to three waste picker organizations launching initiatives. The Belize Recycling and Waste Management Association (BRWMA) will highlight local challenges and opportunities for empowering recyclers.

This webinar is part of a 13-month program supported by Environment and Climate Change Canada, in collaboration with the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWAMA).

🎓 Participants who complete the program will receive a certificate of participation!

🌊 The Recycle Organics Program recently participated in the National Dialogue on Marine Litter Prevention and Plastic Waste Management—a vibrant 3-day event dedicated to building a cleaner, more sustainable future for the Caribbean.

We also joined the Workshop on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Circular Economy Business Model Ecosystem, hosted by the University of Guyana as part of the Prevention of Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea (PROMAR) Project. Our local consultant in Guyana, Samuel Wright, was actively engaged in the discussions.

PROMAR is implemented in Guyana by the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences (FEES) at the University, with support from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV).

The workshop featured insightful presentations by Mr. Aramath Munnolimath of Adelphi Research GmbH and convened key stakeholders—government agencies, regulators, and environmental experts—to explore the challenges and opportunities of EPR and plastic waste management in Guyana.

The Recycle Organics Program continues its collaboration with the University of Guyana and FEES by providing a small-scale biodigester and supporting hands-on learning through field activities, technical visits, and research—contributing to improved organic waste management and mitigation. 📝 Read more here: https://bit.ly/ROBiodUoG

A special thank you to Professor Temitope Oyedotun for his leadership in advancing the PROMAR initiative in Guyana! 👏
