🌱 Advancing Organic Waste Solutions in the Caribbean 🌱

On the heels of our “Deepening Impact” workshop in , returned to to support the launch of a new composting initiative, led by GrenadaGrows Ltd and the Grenada Solid Waste Management Authority (GSWMA). Our team was proudly represented by Project Manager, Felipe Poblete!

This public–private partnership is a major step toward diverting organic waste from Perseverance Landfill—which serves ~95% of Grenada’s population—and transforming it into a valuable resource.

🔎 A recent waste characterization study coordinated by Recycle Organics revealed that 31% of the landfill’s waste is organic—higher than previously estimated.

To kick things off, we delivered a 3-day composting training workshop for 15 participants with representatives from GSWMA and the GrenadaGrows staff, alongside local farmers and agricultural officials. The sessions covered:

🔸 Feedstock selection & site prep
🔸 Composting methods & equipment
🔸 Monitoring techniques and final use

The new “Greening Grenada: Market Composting Project” will treat organic waste collected from vendors at Saint George’s Market, with operations set to begin in the coming weeks and full-scale composting by November.

We’re thrilled to be supporting this work alongside GSWMA and GrenadaGrows, with special thanks to Environment and Climate Change (ECCC) for their continued financial support, and additional support from Republic Bank for infrastructure and outreach.

This initiative is part of our broader mission to help Small Island Developing States reduce emissions through composting and organic waste diversion.

📢 Stay tuned for our upcoming blog on the waste characterization study. In the meantime, check out how we’re scaling organics solutions across the Caribbean and beyond: https://lnkd.in/dSc24hdJ

🌿 “It’s community driven—cost effective—and creates lasting solutions for organic waste.”

Reene Smith, Project Officer at the Ministry of Climate Resilience, the Environment and Renewable Energy, shared her reflections after visiting a community site in Florianópolis during our “Deepening Impact, Expanding Action in SIDS” workshop.

Inspired by what she saw in , Reene highlighted the potential of community-led composting as a practical, affordable and impactful way to divert organic waste from landfills in .

These kinds of exchanges are exactly what this workshop was all about: learning from real-world solutions and finding inspiration for back home.

🌍♻️ Latin America and the Caribbean are confronting a critical challenge: reducing emissions from organic —responsible for over 11% of the region’s methane emissions—and closing the 10,000+ open dumpsites that are still operating today.

A new Regional Cooperation Programme, launched under the Forum of Ministers of Environment with the UN Environment Programme and the Climate & Clean Air Coalition, lays out a path forward—identifying both the opportunities and the barriers the region must address.

At Recycle Organics, we’re proud to be a collaborator in this important breakthrough. What began in Chile as a program to support the country’s National Organic Waste Strategy has grown into a multi-country initiative active in 25+ countries—helping governments move from ambition to implementation. This resonates with Chile’s leadership in 2024, when the country reinforced the call for stronger regional cooperation on waste and methane during the CCAC Ministerial, helping to set the stage for today’s Regional Programme.

We’ve seen first-hand how regional collaboration accelerates impact—as highlighted during our recent workshop with SIDS, “Deepening Impact, Expanding Action,” where participants emphasized the power of sharing knowledge and multi-faceted solutions that transcend sectors and borders. This new Programme reinforces a core belief we hold: that countries can co-create strong, coherent regional frameworks, from policy and regulation to robust MRV systems. Recycle Organics is committed to serving as a platform that continues to make this possible.

🙏 A heartfelt thank you to our strategic partners— and , for driving this Regional Programme, and to the Global Methane Hub and Environment and Climate Change Canada, whose support has been critical to expanding Recycle Organics as a complementary initiative now active in 25+ countries.

🌱 “This is very innovative… something we could take back to and start using right away.”

During our workshop in , participants saw firsthand how decentralized composting systems can work at the community level.

Seon Hamer, Lecturer at the University of Guyana, shared how these practical solutions can inspire and accelerate efforts back home—showing that when it comes to organic waste, the infrastructure is often already in place — what’s needed is inspired coordination, a creative vision and the determination to bring it all to life.

And stay tuned for more voices we’ll be sharing from last week’s workshop. We’re still feeling the excitement and gratitude for all that was learned and exchanged!

3 days, multiple countries participating and countless moments of learning, collaboration and inspiration.

Our “Deepening Impact, Expanding Action in SIDS” workshop in , Brazil, has come to a close—but the conversations, connections and commitments made here are only the beginning.

The final day featured:

🔹 Panels on composting, biodigestion and education, showcasing powerful local initiatives from Belize, Grenada, Guyana, Saint Lucia, Fiji and Samoa.

🔹 Peer-to-peer clinics that allowed countries to share challenges—like financing, legal frameworks and rural access

🔹 An “interactive futures” exercise helping each delegation define specific short, medium and long-term actions to advance organic waste management, identify the support they will need and draw inspiration from peers across the region.

What stood out? The recognition that organic waste is more than a waste-sector issue—it builds bridges to agriculture, education, health and finance. And most of all, that ownership and leadership must come from within: local champions driving change in their own communities.

💬 As we all prepare to head back home, one message resonates: our champions are already here. The technical capacity, motivation and vision exist—and now, with this community of practice, the opportunity to scale and solutions together is stronger than ever.

We want to thank everyone who made this possible: the country representatives from across the Caribbean and Pacific, our incredible local consultants, the strategic funders who have believed in this work and every participant who contributed their knowledge, questions and ideas.

These strengthened relationships fostered in Florianópolis are the foundation for future collaboration. And while this workshop ends, the journey continues. has been supporting countries on for over 7 years—and we’re excited for the road ahead. Together, we’re turning organic waste into climate solutions, building resilience and advancing a circular economy across the Global South.

Thank you for being part of this community.

🍏 Day 2 of our “Deepening Impact, Expanding Action in SIDS” workshop in , Brazil, was all about seeing solutions in action!

We hit the ground running with site visits to local organic waste management projects —bringing country representatives from the Caribbean and Pacific regions face-to-face with real-world innovations in , practices and more.

♻️From hotels and apartment complexes to community-led initiatives, we explored how everyday stakeholders are transforming organic waste into valuable resources—cutting emissions, supporting food systems and driving local circular economies. Some projects stood out as powerful examples of how communities can take ownership of waste practices through collaboration and coordination, while others—like a privately managed site—highlighted the potential of strong public–private partnerships.

👀 Why does this matter?

These visits not only showcased what’s possible, they also sparked dialogue and reflection among participants—comparing experiences, questioning approaches, and drawing lessons to take back home. Because when climate-vulnerable countries see solutions working in similar socio-economic contexts, it shifts the mindset from "Is this possible?" to "We can do this too." That’s the power of south-south collaboration and peer-to-peer learning.

🌍 As new national climate commitments rolled out during the UN Climate Summit this week, one thing is clear: we need more action. Especially in the waste sector.

Organic waste remains an underused lever for —despite its potential to help countries meet and strengthen their . Countries without waste targets in their NDCs are missing a major opportunity. It’s time to change that.

💡 Through Recycle Organics, we’re helping SIDS and Global South countries take the lead on reducing methane—scaling practical solutions and reimagining waste as a climate solution.
