Day 2 | Countdown to World Blood Donor Day - June 14

When you donate blood, you never know whose life you saved. They may never know your name. You may never meet. But somewhere, in a ward you have never visited, your gesture restored a dying life.

That is what solidarity looks like in its purest form. It is a powerful act that connects strangers across the distance of their circumstances. This year's National Theme says it simply and beautifully: "One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives."

At The Gong, we believe community is not just about those we know. It is about those we are willing to show up for even when we will never see them.
Be that person.

📢 Day 1 | Countdown to World Blood Donor Day - June 14
Cameroon needs blood. Urgently. Every year, 400,000 pints of blood are needed across our health facilities. Less than half of that is available. That means mothers in labour, children in crises, and road accident survivors are waiting – and sometimes not making it because the blood simply isn't there.
On June 14, we mark . Between now and then, we strongly encourage you to be part of the solution if you meet donor criteria.
One donation! Up to three lives saved.

Will you show up?

09/06/2026

June 14 is Blood Donor Day. Cameroon needs 400,000 units of blood annually, and only 47% is realized, leaving an acute shortage of blood products for those in need.

Cameroonian Disability Rights Advocate Appointed to UNHCR Global Advisory Board

Cameroonian-born, Nogning Armelle has been appointed member of the UNHCR Global Advisory Board of Organizations Led by Forcibly Displaced and Stateless Persons with Disabilities. It is a two-year mandate that places her among a select group of global voices shaping United Nations policy on disability inclusion.

The appointment followed a competitive application process that included background checks, impact assessments and institutional recommendations, among them, evidence of collaborative working relationships with key stakeholders in Cameroon.

As an advisory board member, she will counsel UNHCR on inclusion approaches for refugees and forcibly displaced persons with disabilities, and influence policy implementation under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Persons with disabilities, she argues, are too often consulted last, brought in after decisions have already been made.
"Inclusion is not just about bringing persons with disabilities at the point where they have already taken everything. They should be decision makers in things that concern them."

Armelle is a female entrepreneur with mobility impairment and current Board Chair of the Coordinating Unit of Associations of Persons with Disabilities Cameroon (CUAPWD) in the North West Region of Cameroon. She is also a fashionist, widely travelled as an advocate for the rights of PWDs.

🌳Tubah Mayor Recognized for Years of Environmental Action

Mayor Tanjong Martin of Tubah Council is no stranger to recognition. His latest award from the Cameroon Climate Journalism Network adds to a track record built on delivery.

This year, Tubah Council has set a target of planting 28,000 trees across the municipality. The ambition is consistent with an approach that has defined Mayor Tanjong's tenure. The Council has previously received over 16,000 trees through a European Union-funded reforestation project, distributing seedlings to water management schemes across Kedjom Ketinguh, Kedjom Keku, Finge, Bambui, Bambili and Sabga, communities that depend on functional water catchments for daily life.

Water catchment protection is among priorities of the Council's environmental interventions. Trees planted around catchment areas are managed by local water scheme managers with a mandate to protect soil water and guard against human and animal encroachment.

Waste management has also become a Tubah signature. The Council converts plastic waste into pavement bricks, a programme that engages youth, cleans the environment and produces construction material simultaneously.

Mayor Tanjong holds that plastics left in the soil compromise agricultural yields. Removing them serves both the environment and food production.

For the Cameroon Climate Journalism Network, the recognition of Mayor Tanjong Martin is a record of consistent, community-rooted environmental action in Tubah.

Keeping Children in Class with Quality Meals

In 260 schools across six regions of Cameroon, Nascent Solutions, has ensured learners are not scared from the classrooms due to hunger. Thousands of children who would have hitherto been hunting to survive the next meal now have little to worry as food meets them in their classrooms.

Recognized by the Cameroon Climate Journalism Network for its community impact, Nascent Solutions has been knitting the link between food security, education and sustainable agriculture since 2004. Their school feeding programme has built futures, training parents and community cooperatives in climate-smart agriculture to grow the food that supplies their own children.

“In the 260 schools we are working with, children are able to have healthy meals every school day,” Roland Kebuh, Regional Coordinator of Nascent Solutions for North West highlighted.

With improved agricultural practices which ensure food quality, Roland and his team are redirecting procurement to benefit local supplies. Such is a supply chain built on dignity as much as data.

For Roland, this recognition reminds him that they serve a community that observes details of their processes and impact. "Our work is being noticed. And if it is being noticed, it's because it is yielding fruits."

🌿 Recognized for Environmental-friendly Policies

On , the Cameroon Climate Journalism Network turned its spotlight on the North West Regional Assembly, recognizing Hon. Ghejung Awunti, Commissioner for Economic Development, whose administrative push for sustainable development in the region earned him a place among this year's honourees.

Under the stewardship of Regional Executive Council President Prof. Fru Angwafo III, the Assembly is tackling real climate pressure points, including, water management, unregulated construction, and farming practices from the inside out.

“We have things that we have to do in the region that impact us more than anything coming from outside,” Hon. Awunti said. Tree planting, water catchment restoration across all seven divisions of the region using the Highly-Intensive Labour Approach (HILA) are some areas of impact the Assembly has recorded as it journeys through the second mandate. “A people showing up for their environment. It makes it worthwhile,” he added.

The Man in Uniform Who Calls You Brother

Senior Warrant Officer, Taku Paul is the one name on lips of Bamenda city dwellers when disasters or emergencies hit.

The Army Rescue Unit Head in Bamenda was honoured with the Winner of Service to Humanity Award and Champion in Rescue Missions and Flood Operations at the Cameroon Climate Journalism Network awards – celebrated not for a title, but for a track record of showing up when it matters most. Flood rescue, fire incident response, medical emergencies are his fief. Wherever Bamenda has needed saving, Chief Warrant Officer, Taku has been there.

His philosophy holds that “Wearing a uniform doesn't mean you have to be hard on the population. We create an atmosphere where the army rescue and the population of Bamenda are always one.”

His message to residents is that no one should hesitate to ring him when disasters or emergencies show up. “The moment there is any incident, call immediately. Whenever they call, we will be there.” Bamenda Army Rescue lines are:
