Emeritus Bishop of Mamfe, Francis Teke Lysinge Laid to Rest

Emeritus Bishop Francis Teke Lysinge, the pioneer Bishop of the Diocese of Mamfe, has been laid to rest following a solemn funeral Mass at St. Joseph Cathedral in Mamfe on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

The funeral brought together the Apostolic Nuncio to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, His Grace Avelino Bettencourt, Bishops, priests, religious, family members, friends and hundreds of faithful who gathered to bid farewell to the late prelate.

In his homily, the Archbishop of Bamenda, His Grace Andrew Nkea Fuanya, reflected on death and eternal life, recalling the words of Scripture: “You are dust, and unto dust you shall return.”

Archbishop Nkea described Bishop Lysinge’s death as a “birthday in heaven,” saying the late bishop had simply returned to the Father whom he faithfully served throughout his earthly life.

He paid tribute to Bishop Lysinge’s compassion, kindness, humility and gentleness, describing him as a dedicated pastor who spent his life serving God and His people.

According to Archbishop Nkea, Bishop Lysinge’s greatest ambition was to become a saint, and he lived his life working towards that goal.

The Archbishop urged the faithful not to see the bishop’s death only as a moment of mourning, but also as an opportunity to remember and practise the values he taught throughout his ministry.

“His legacy is the teachings he gave us,” calling on Christians to preserve and live by the lessons left behind by the late shepherd.

Bishop Francis Teke Lysinge was ordained a priest on April 17, 1966, by Bishop Jules Peeters, alongside three other priests, at the Cathedral in Small Soppo, Buea.

He subsequently devoted decades to the Catholic Church, serving both as a priest and bishop and becoming an important figure in the history of the Diocese of Mamfe.

Bishop Lysinge died on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, aged 87 years and seven months.

His burial at the Chapel of the Bishops at St. Joseph Cathedral, Mamfe, brings to a close the funeral rites for a prelate remembered for his long years of pastoral service, humility and commitment to the Church.

The faithful now commend his soul to God, praying that, through the mercy of God, he may rest in eternal peace. Amen.

Atanga Nji Visits Limbe Flood Victims, Consoles Family That Lost Three

Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, has arrived in Limbe, South West Region, eight days after devastating torrential rains and landslides killed three young women and caused widespread damage across the coastal city.

The minister arrived on Thursday, August 13, 2026, as part of the government’s response to the disaster that struck Limbe on Wednesday, August 5.

One of his first activities was a visit to the Limbe Regional Hospital, where he met and consoled Mr. Meh James Duh, who is receiving treatment after surviving the collapse of an embankment wall at Mbende.

The collapse claimed the lives of three members of his family, leaving him hospitalised while the community continues to mourn the victims.

Minister Atanga Nji conveyed a message of sympathy and comfort from President Paul Biya and First Lady Chantal Biya to the survivor and the bereaved family.

The minister spent time with Mr. Duh before continuing his tour of the hospital. He later held a private meeting with the Director of the Limbe Regional Hospital, Dr. Arreneke Nyenti, as part of his assessment of the situation and the care being provided to victims of the disaster.

The visit comes as Limbe continues to deal with the consequences of the heavy rains, which triggered landslides and flash floods in several parts of the city.

The August 5 disaster left at least six homes destroyed, while several other residences and offices were flooded. Roads and bridges were also affected, disrupting movement in parts of the city.

The perimeter fence of the Limbe Wildlife Centre was among the infrastructure reportedly damaged by the heavy rains and flooding.

The deaths of the three young women at Mbende have particularly shocked the population, with the tragedy highlighting the risks posed by unstable embankments and intense rainfall in some parts of Limbe.

As Minister in charge of territorial administration and civil protection, Paul Atanga Nji’s visit is also expected to focus on the immediate needs of affected families and communities.

The government is expected to provide relief assistance to victims who suffered deaths, injuries and property losses during the disaster.

The minister’s presence in Limbe comes four days after the Minister of Secondary Education, Prof. Pauline Nalova Lyonga, visited the city on August 9.

During that visit, Prof. Nalova Lyonga provided FCFA 7 million in assistance to flood victims through her private foundation. She also visited Mr. Meh Duh at the Limbe Regional Hospital and offered support to the survivor of the Mbende landslide.

Paul Atanga Nji’s current visit is his first to Limbe since June 11, 2022, when he attended the coronation and enthronement of the Paramount Chief of Limbe, HRM Chief John Elufa Manga Williams.

His visit therefore comes at a critical moment for the city, with the population and affected families seeking urgent assistance to recover from the destruction caused by the August 5 rains.

Douala: At Least 6 Killed in Abandoned Building Collapse

At least six people, including three children, were killed and six others rescued after a two-storey building collapsed in Douala late Friday night into early Saturday, following torrential rains in the economic capital.

The incident occurred behind the Saint James Hotel in Bonamoussadi, Douala V Subdivision.

The Douala City Council and the firefighting brigade confirmed the death toll. Rescue operations were ongoing Saturday to recover bodies that may still be trapped in the rubble, according to officials on the ground.

According to witnesses and the Douala City Council, the building had been abandoned but was still occupied despite its weak and dilapidated condition. The Council said the structure had been marked as being at risk of collapse and that previous occupants had been evacuated.

Witnesses said the unfinished building was mainly housing families from the northern regions and street youths known locally as "Nanga Mboko".

Another witness stated that the building’s owner had told occupants to evacuate, adding that he would not collect rent and would not be held responsible if anything happened to them.
