The African Union has issued an urgent appeal for international intervention in Mali, citing a rapidly deteriorating security situation exacerbated by a terrorist-imposed fuel blockade and a worsening humanitarian crisis affecting civilians.
In a statement released from Addis Ababa, the AU expressed profound concern regarding the escalating violence and strongly condemned the deliberate killing of innocent civilians, which has caused immense suffering and heightened instability within affected communities.
The Commission denounced recent abductions, including the kidnapping of three Egyptian nationals, and demanded their immediate and unconditional release, emphasizing that such actions constitute unacceptable violations of human rights and international law.
The African Union has called for a coordinated international response to terrorism and violent extremism in the Sahel region, advocating for enhanced cooperation, intelligence sharing, and sustained support for countries facing these threats.
Finally, the Commission reaffirmed its solidarity with the government and people of Mali, as well as with the families of the victims, reiterating its commitment to peace, security, and development across the Sahel.

Presidential candidate Dr. Jacques BOUHGA HAGBE has resigned from the Cameroonian National Citizen Movement (MCNC), the party that provided him with a ticket for the presidential election on October 12.

In a letter addressed to the MCNC National Party President, Jean MONTHE NKOUOBITE, the former IMF economist stated that his resignation results from major disagreements over how to conduct the struggle for change in Cameroon while respecting the country’s legal and republican framework, as well as democratic values.

“I remain deeply convinced that the political and institutional transformation of our country must be grounded in legality, rigour, and civic education,” he said.

According to Dr. BOUHGA HAGBE, political parties have a duty to provide civic education and shape public opinion.

“They must under no circumstances foster illusions devoid of legal basis or divert public opinion from the legal framework of political action.”

He criticized the party for failing to challenge the election results at the constitutional level and for not supporting the appeals filed by other parties, such as the UDC.

“In doing so, the MCNC deprived itself of any right to contest the proclaimed results,” he stated.

He added, “It is also undeniable that the representative of the MCNC candidate on the National Commission for the General Count of Votes, who is also a prominent member of the MCNC, signed the minutes containing the figures officially proclaimed by the Constitutional Council. Therefore, it seems inconsistent to subsequently reject the conclusions of a process that we helped to validate.”

He has given the party president 48 hours to respond; otherwise, the lack of response will be taken as acceptance.

The former IMF economist was among those who congratulated Paul Biya on winning the election and was also present at President Paul Biya’s swearing-in ceremony.
