Two Years Later, The Tears For Belo’s Fallen Heroes Still Flow
It happened exactly two years ago today, but the pain still feels fresh, like it was yesterday.
On May 20, 2024, the town of Belo lost two important leaders. The former Mayor, Dr. Ngong Innocent Ankiambom, and the Inspector for Basic Education, Dr. Anghi Aaron Ngong, were brutally shot and killed by gunmen. They were not looking for trouble. They were simply going to celebrate National Day with the community they loved.
Instead of a celebration, they met a cruel and sudden end.
This tragedy left a deep and painful void in Belo. Justice later came, and the masterminder according to the court was held responsible. He was found guilty and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Even so, no court ruling can ever bring back these two remarkable men.
Belo had to find a way to heal. Today, Mayor Mbuh Alice sits in the late mayor’s seat. She was elected by the councillors to pick up where Mayor Ngong left off and continue his vision.
She is walking in the footsteps of giants, but the memory of that terrible day and of the men who gave everything for Belo will never be forgotten.
