"Viwir" – The Essence of Humanity in Lamnso: Africa's True Religion
In the Lamnso dialect, spoken by the Nso people of Cameroon, "Viwir" (or "Vi-wir") represents a profound concept—humanity. It embodies the essence of love for fellow human beings, selflessness, and the belief that the best way to connect with God is through our actions toward others. This contrasts sharply with the version of Christianity imposed on Africa during colonization, which has often fostered selfishness, division, and even racism.
While Christianity, as introduced by Western missionaries, frequently focused on outward practices—holding large Bibles, quoting scriptures, attending church, and following rigid moral codes—Viwir shifts the focus to the heart of human relationships. The true essence of humanity isn't found in external rituals but in how we treat one another. It's about love without prejudice, selflessness without expectation, and seeing the divine in every person regardless of their race, social class, or religious background.
An anecdote is shared about a woman who, by conventional Christian standards, might be judged for not attending church, having tattoos, or engaging in behaviors condemned by certain religious doctrines. Yet, through one good deed, through Viwir, she finds her place in God's heart. Her love and compassion for others speak louder than the external markers of faith, demonstrating that true spirituality lies in acts of humanity.
In Africa, Viwir is not just an abstract idea. It’s a lived experience. The proverb "Wir e ze wir bih wir" in Lamnso, meaning "Man became successful because of humanity," emphasizes how essential kindness and community are to prosperity and success. This proverb captures the depth of Viwir, teaching that it’s through collective support, empathy, and love that individuals and societies thrive.
Africa’s true religion should be rooted in humanity, not in the distorted version of Christianity forced upon it. Viwir—humanity—sees beyond race, color, social status, and geographical boundaries. It encourages us to treat every person with love and respect, building bridges rather than barriers.
