🇳🇬Super Eagles Captain Troost-Ekong Retires

Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong has announced his retirement from international football, ending a decade-long spell with the Super Eagles just weeks before the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Morocco.

Troost-Ekong, 31, confirmed in a statement on Thursday that his last appearance for Nigeria came in the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff defeat to DR Congo, a match that sealed the country’s failure to qualify for the tournament.

“Every single time I put on that iconic shirt, I thought back to the moment Stephen Keshi gave me my debut,” he wrote. “Nigeria took me in and trusted me to represent a nation of 230+ million. I have lived my dream.”

Over the course of his international career, he won three major medals: bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympics, bronze at the 2019 AFCON, and a runners-up medal at the delayed 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire.

DR Congo’s Chancel Mbemba scored the winner at the 90+2 to claim the victory. DR Congo will now face Nigeria in Sunday’s final for a ticket to represent Africa at the Inter-continental playoffs.

CAF concludes an agreement with SuperSport for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 broadcast rights for Sub-Saharan Africa for English and local languages.

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe was joined by CANAL+ Africa CEO David Mignot, Canal+ Africa Chairman, Calvo Mawela and SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha at SuperSport headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa.

SuperSport joins many other global broadcasters that have signed up for the official broadcast rights of the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Morocco 2025.
