It's about 3 more weeks to the end of this long holiday. You still have a chance at making the holidays more exciting, educative and memorable for the 3-16-year olds in your home.

Get them story books and read to them or guide them through the process because “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”Dr. Seuss.

Here are 5 reasons why you should invest in books for your children.

1. Reading builds a strong academic foundation for children. When they get used to reading at an early age, they won't find studying stressful in their later academic careers. As such, they'll always perform well.

2. The moment a child begins to read and enjoy stories, he/she understands that there are interesting things in books and will definitely want more. The moment a child understands this, it'll be able to acquire more knowledge which is the only thing they need to survive in your absence.

3. When you read to your children or read with them, it strengthens the bond between you. Children will remember the mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters who tell them interesting stories for the rest of their lives.

4. Reading develops the imagination, cognition and creativity better than audiovisuals and the information sticks better. You get to imagine the images created with words, not just see them
5. Reading improves a child's language and spelling ability, thus building a strong pen.

So, instead of always buying candies and clothes for your kids, also buy books and encourage them to read. You can feed and cloth a child well enough, but if its brains are not developed, your efforts would have been useless.

A lot of parents give the excuse that they don't have time to read to their children. If you don't do it, who will? The teacher in school has his role to play, the home teacher has his role to play, so do the parents.

NB: cartons are good, but the content does not reflect our realities. Cartons that encourage African values are, so far, very rare. The best option is folktales and stories written with the African consciousness.
