As the week-long sustainability awareness campaign by Cameroon Green Horizon comes to a close, Day 7 aligns with the global observance of World Press Freedom Day, a moment to reflect on the vital role of media in shaping a sustainable future.

Across Cameroon, from Yaoundé to communities nationwide, access to accurate information remains a powerful tool for transformation. A free and independent press does more than report the news, it informs citizens, amplifies solutions, and holds institutions accountable for environmental and social impact.

This year’s global theme, “𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲,” resonates strongly with the mission of Cameroon Green Horizon. Sustainable development cannot thrive without transparency, truth, and inclusive dialogue. Whether highlighting climate challenges, promoting green innovations, or showcasing youth-led initiatives, the media serves as a bridge between awareness and action.

Aligned with SDG 16, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, Cameroon Green Horizon recognizes that environmental accountability depends on informed communities and responsible storytelling. Strengthening media freedom is therefore not separate from sustainability, it is central to it.

As this campaign concludes, the message remains clear. A greener, healthier, and more sustainable Cameroon requires not only action on the ground but also voices that are free, informed, and empowered.

Cameroon has adopted a new constitutional reform reintroducing the position of Vice President, following approval by both chambers of Parliament. The move signals a significant adjustment to the country’s leadership structure.

The Social Democratic Front has strongly criticized Cameroon’s newly adopted constitutional reform, calling it a dangerous concentration of power.

Speaking in Yaoundé on April 3, National Chairman Joshua N. Osih said lawmakers were given just two hours to review the bill. The party proposed a joint President–Vice President ticket reflecting both former West and East Cameroon, but the amendment was rejected without debate.

The SDF opposed the new provision allowing the President to appoint and dismiss the Vice President, arguing it undermines national unity and democratic principles. The party described the reform as a move to control succession rather than promote democracy, insisting the fight is far from over.
