A female teacher has been killed in a Yaoundé hotel after meeting a man she had been communicating with online, making her the eighth woman recorded by MMI News as a victim of femicide in Cameroon in as many days.

The victim, identified as Mme Beguel Merline, a teacher at Powerbache Éducation, reportedly died on Tuesday morning, August 25, 2026, at the Salvador Hotel in Yaoundé.

According to information first shared by whistleblower N’Zui Manto and widely circulated on social media, Merline had been communicating with the suspect online before the two agreed to meet in person.

Reports say the man had previously sent her money and later paid her transport fare to meet him at the hotel.

The encounter reportedly turned violent after the man discovered that Merline was older than he had expected. An argument allegedly followed, during which he demanded that she immediately refund money he had spent on her during their online relationship.

When she refused, the confrontation reportedly became physical and ended with Merline’s death.

The exact circumstances of the killing have not yet been independently established, and police have not publicly released a full account of what happened inside the hotel room.

The suspect was reportedly attacked by a crowd before police arrived and took him into custody. Merline’s body was later transported to a mortuary.

Her death comes amid an alarming series of killings of women across Cameroon.

MMI News has now recorded eight women killed in eight days in cases involving intimate partners, men known to the victims, or circumstances linked to gender-based violence.

Eight women. Eight days.

At what point does this stop being treated as a collection of individual crimes and start being confronted as a national crisis?

The latest killing again raises questions about the protection of women, the handling of domestic and gender-based violence, and what authorities are doing as the death toll continues to rise.

How many more women must die before Cameroon treats femicide as an emergency?
