Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old from Chicago, Illinois, has been elected as the 267th pope, taking the name Leo XIV. He becomes the first pope from the United States in history.
Known for his global leadership and pastoral sensitivity, Pope Leo XIV spent many years as a missionary in South America and most recently served as the head of a key Vatican office overseeing bishop appointments. His election signals a commitment to continuing the reforms initiated by Pope Francis.
In a symbolic gesture during his first address, Pope Leo XIV referenced a world "held hostage by division, suffering, and injustice," and called for unity, compassion, and courageous dialogue across all nations and faiths.
