Saudi Arabia has ordered eight Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil passenger vessels, the world’s first zero-emission ships, for its NEOM city project. This is the largest order ever for the Stockholm-based company.
The Candela P-12, launched last year, is set to start serving Stockholm's public transport in fall 2024. These vessels fly above the water on computer-controlled hydrofoils, cutting energy use by 80% compared to traditional ships.
The P-12 can travel at 25 knots (28.77 mph) and has over two hours of battery life. It carries up to 30 passengers, lifts above the water at take-off speed, and uses a 252-kWh battery for its power.
Smaller and faster than other vessels, the P-12 allows for more frequent departures and quicker travel times.
