If she collects your transport fare, switches off her phone and blocks you, is it "breakfast" or a criminal offence?
You sent her transport fare
She replied, "I'm on my way."
A few minutes later, her phone became unreachable.
Hours passed.
The next day, you discovered you had been blocked everywhere.
Most people will laugh and say:
"Guy, accept your breakfast and move on."
But let's talk law.
If a woman (or anyone at all) collects transport money from you with a promise to come see you, and from the very beginning never had any intention of coming, that may amount to the offence of Obtaining by False Pretence.
In simple terms, Obtaining by False Pretence happens when:
🥢 Someone tells you something that is false,
🥢 You believe it,
🥢 Because you believe it, you part with your money or property, and
🥢 The person intended to deceive you from the start.
Under the law, once money is obtained through deception, it is no longer merely a relationship issue. It may become a criminal matter.
But let's be clear.
Not every failure to show up is a crime.
If:
🥢 She genuinely intended to come but an emergency occurred,
🥢 There was a misunderstanding,
🥢 Circumstances changed unexpectedly, or
🥢 The money was later refunded,
then a criminal offence may not have been committed.
The key question is intention.
Did she intend to deceive you from the beginning just to collect money?
Or did something happen after she accepted the transport fare?
That is what investigators and the court would look at.
Also note that the amount involved does not matter.
Whether it is ₦5,000 or ₦500,000, once deception is established, the law may treat both situations the same way.
Many people joke about stories of "she collected transport and disappeared."
But legally speaking, where there is clear evidence that the money was collected through deliberate deception, the law may see it differently.
Before running to the police station, however, ask yourself:
🥢 Do you have chats?
🥢 Do you have bank transfer receipts?
🥢 Do you have evidence showing there was deception from the beginning?
Because law is based on proof, not emotions.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
