Cameroon owes 7.7 billion CFA francs to Hysacam, the main company that collects garbage in big cities. This debt has not changed since June 2024, and it makes it hard for Hysacam to do its job. Even though another company, Thychlof Sarl, helps in some areas, the problem is serious: streets are full of trash, dumps are overflowing, and people suffer from bad hygiene and health risks.

Local governments are supposed to pay for these services, but almost 85% of the money comes from the national government, which is struggling to pay. Since 2019, there is a special 0.5% tax on imports to help pay for waste collection. But nobody knows where this money goes, raising doubts about poor management or lack of transparency.

For example, Yaoundé alone needs 15 billion CFA francs a year for good garbage collection, but the government cannot provide this money. As cities get dirtier, this is not just a money problem but also a question of good leadership and political will.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday dismissed the planned August 15 summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, warning that any peace deal excluding Kyiv would be “dead solutions” that cannot work. The meeting, billed as a possible breakthrough in the three-year war, will take place before any talks involving Zelenskyy, fueling fears Ukraine could be sidelined. Trump has suggested a settlement might involve “swapping of territories,” an idea Zelenskyy rejected, vowing Ukraine would not cede land to Russia. The opposition in Kyiv comes as both sides continue deadly strikes: Russian drones killed at least four people in southern Ukraine, while Moscow reported downing over 100 Ukrainian drones. The war has claimed tens of thousands of lives, and despite the summit’s symbolism, Moscow and Kyiv remain far apart on conditions for peace.

Issa Tchiroma suddenly discovers, just four months before the presidential election, that there are no schools in Northern Cameroon — and chooses to resign.

In political terms, this development raises serious concerns about timing, sincerity, and accountability.

After years in positions of leadership and influence, such a late realization may appear less as an act of conscience and more as a strategic move to distance himself from a system he helped uphold. The public may rightly question: Why now? Why not before?
My take 👇👇
True leadership is measured not by late regrets, but by timely action and consistent advocacy for the people's needs.

"Let me be clear: centralization has failed." Issa Tchiroma

TOWARDS A NEW FORM OF FEDERALISM CHOSEN BY THE SOVEREIGN PEOPLE

My dear compatriots,

Cameroon deserves a political system that rises to the level of its challenges—one that is faithful to its history, respectful of its diversity, and adapted to the realities of its territories.

It is time to turn the page on a centralized system that has reached its limits. It is time to bring the State closer to the citizen, to listen to local realities, and to build a country that is fairer, more balanced, and more coherent.

I propose a territorial re-foundation in stages. Each municipality, each region, must have the means to decide, to act, and to innovate. This will not be a favor, nor a privilege—it will be a right. A right for every territory to be a full-fledged actor in the national destiny.

The State must no longer dominate from a distance. It must serve up close. It must become once again what it should never have ceased to be: a common home—protective, just, and responsive.

To our Anglophone compatriots in the North-West and South-West regions, I want to speak frankly. The crisis affecting them is not only a security issue. It is also political, historical, and identity-based. They do not need others to speak for them—they need to be heard. They must feel, in concrete terms, that the Republic is their home too, that their voice matters, and that their history is acknowledged.

It is by building together, while respecting their specificities, that we will establish lasting peace.

Let me be clear: centralization has failed.

And when our democratic, institutional, and social foundations are strong enough, we will engage—through a concerted and transparent process—in a journey allowing the Cameroonian people to choose, via referendum, the form of the State that reflects their aspirations.

This will not be a decision imposed from above, but a sovereign choice of the people—made in peace, in serenity,
