Discover the Inspiring Journey of Rev. Nungu Magdalene Manyi – Empowering Immigrants and Refugees with Disabilities in Canada 🌟
Rev. Nungu Magdalene Manyi, born in Cameroon, is a true example of resilience, strength, and faith. At just 12 years old, Magdalene sustained a traumatic spinal cord injury while helping her grandmother, which left her quadriplegic. Despite this life-changing injury, Magdalene's determination led her to become a powerful advocate for people with disabilities, both in Africa and now in Canada.
Having experienced firsthand the barriers to education, assistive devices, and mobility tools in Africa, Magdalene was motivated to break down these obstacles. When she arrived in Canada as a newcomer with a disability, she faced additional challenges, including difficulties with accessibility and emotional trauma. Yet, she was determined to make a difference.
A Game-Changing Government-Funded Program
Magdalene’s greatest achievement came when she secured a fully funded government grant to provide paid job placements and job readiness programs for newcomers with disabilities. This program helps immigrants and refugees gain job experience, build confidence, and integrate into the Canadian workforce. Through her leadership, many Black immigrants and refugees have gained access to the Canadian job market.
Creating Lasting Impact
Through Lead Disability Inclusive Society BC, Magdalene continues to empower individuals and families, providing support that addresses emotional, physical, and spiritual needs. Her work has led to a reduction in the cycle of disability and poverty, helping communities in both Canada and Africa. Magdalene is also a passionate advocate for inclusive education, believing that every child deserves equal opportunities to succeed.
