High Production of Drugs in the streets of The UK

Police have uncovered a disturbing trend where organised crime groups are exploiting empty shops and pubs to grow cannabis on an industrial scale. Across the UK, vacant commercial properties, from old toy shops to former banks, have been converted into cannabis farms. In Newport, South Wales, over 3,000 cannabis plants were found in a former department store, with an estimated street value of £2 million. Police warn that estate agents, electricians, and tradespeople could face prosecution if they assist in these illegal operations.

The decline of high streets, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, has made these properties attractive to criminal gangs. With less foot traffic during the evening, these cannabis farms can operate undetected. Chief Constable Richard Lewis, leading the National Police Chiefs’ Council on drugs, emphasized the seriousness of the issue and urged the public to report suspicious activities, such as taped-up windows or bright lights at odd hours. The police have intensified their efforts, resulting in nearly 1,000 arrests last year and are now targeting not just growers but also those who facilitate these crimes.
