🚨 Will Cameroon Mayors and Councilors also see their mandates extended?

President Paul Biya has signed Law No. 2026/001 and the mandate for Members of the National Assembly is extended from 31 March 2026 to 20 December 2026.

⏳ Extra Time: Your current MPs (Deputies) will now serve for an additional 9 months.

Here is the breakdown of why this matters:
1️⃣ Why the Extension?
The government cited the need to "decongest" the electoral calendar. The state aims to reduce the financial and logistical pressure of holding multiple massive elections simultaneously.

2️⃣ The "Twin" Effect
In Cameroon, Legislative and Municipal (Council) elections usually happen together.
By extending the MP terms to December 2026, likely, your local Mayors and Councilors will also see their mandates extended.

Opposition parties have raised concerns about the delay, while the ruling CPDM argues it ensures a "serene" and well-funded election process.

The Bottom Line:
Your current "Honourables" aren't going anywhere just yet.
They now have an extra 9 months to complete projects and represent your interests before the next nationwide legislative battle.

Is this extension a smart move for the economy, or should we have stuck to the original March deadline?
