Inside Zhenguo Temple, One of China's Oldest Wooden Temples✨

Zhenguo Temple in Shanxi Province is home to Wanfo Hall, one of China's oldest surviving wooden buildings, built in 963 AD during the Five Dynasties period. Inside are 11 original painted clay sculptures from the same era, celebrated for their lifelike expressions and exceptional craftsmanship. Together, they offer a rare glimpse into Chinese Buddhist art from more than 1,000 years ago. 😁

I recently visited the special Dear You exhibition at the Overseas Chinese History Museum of China in Beijing.

The exhibit brings the beloved movie to life with original props: the wooden bicycle, Nanzhi’s dressing table, the Wumi Guo food cart and traditional Chaoshan outfits. The recreated old Chaoshan family house feels like stepping straight into the film scenes.

What touched me most are the qiaopi — handwritten letters sent by overseas Chinese to their families back home across vast oceans. These fragile papers carried missing love, living expenses and whole families’ hopes, recording sincere stories of overseas Chinese history. You can even write your own qiaopi on site to feel this old romantic tradition.

A perfect mix of movie charm, Chaoshan folk culture and real history, this hidden gem is well worth a visit if you’re in Beijing.

Join me on this tour inside Overseas Chinese History Museum of China to check out the special exhibition for the hit film "Dear You."

In this exhibition, you can see authentic original movie props, including the wooden bicycle, Nanzhi’s dressing table, the Wumi Guo food stall, and traditional Chaoshan costumes worn by the lead characters. The restored old Chaoshan residence living room perfectly recreates scenes from the film.

More than just movie displays, the show features precious qiaopi, handwritten letters sent by overseas Chinese to families back home. These historic mails carry longing, money and hope across oceans, recording real touching stories of overseas Chinese generations. Visitors can even write a qiaopi letter on site to experience this old sentimental tradition.
Combining movie art, Chaoshan folk customs and genuine overseas Chinese history, this exhibition is a wonderful hidden spot to learn warm Chinese cultural stories right in Beijing.
