Far more than just a visually striking art form, thangka – a unique Tibetan Buddhist art form – captures the deep cultural and spiritual essence of Xizang. Traditionally painted on cotton or silk scrolls using natural dyes and a specialized brush, these intricate artworks often depict deities and religious scenes, blending vibrant colors with deep symbolism. Unlike framed paintings, thangkas are designed to be rolled up, making them easily portable for monks to carry during religious ceremonies. In 2006, the thangka was recognized as part of China's intangible cultural heritage. By 2009, it had gained a place on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List as a key element of the Regong arts. Both the mother cow and her calf were so focused on eating that they didn't have time for anything else. This is an amusingly common scene in Altay, Xinjiang.

For centuries, Tibetan art was bound by sacred traditions—until visionary artist Tseten Gyurme began rewriting its rules. In this exclusive journey through his studio and the halls of Xizang’s newest cultural landmarks, discover how the piece “Heavy Color Painting on Cloth” became the canvas for Xizang’s evolving identity. From thangka’s intricate spirituality to bold contemporary murals of highways and stadiums, Tseten’s work bridges 2,000 years of history—linking the Chinese legend of Yu the Great with Xizang’s bridge-builder saint Thangtong Gyalpo and even fusing Greenwich time zones with Buddhist motifs in his globe-trotting installation “Time and Buddha”.

Strikingly beautiful yet deadly, the Panamanian golden frog glows in neon yellows and greens, armed with toxins powerful enough to kill 1,200 mice. Despite its name, it is actually a toad – rebranded to avoid confusion with the now-extinct golden toad. In Panama, it is celebrated as a national symbol of good luck, even as the species teeters on the brink of existence, believed to be possibly extinct in the wild. Today, five of these critically endangered creatures are under the care of the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. [Photo: Brookfield Zoo Chicago/Cover Images via IC]

On August 15, the anniversary of Japan's WWII surrender, two maritime rescue films hit theaters – but their messages could not be more different. "Dongji Rescue" retells the true story of the 1942 Lisbon Maru tragedy, where Chinese fishermen risked their lives to save British POWs from Japanese cruelty. "Yukikaze," by contrast, whitewashes an invading fleet as heroes. In an age when history is still contested, the stories we believe shape whether the past is remembered – or rewritten. https://news.cgtn.com/news/2025-08-15/Two-WWII-rescue-films-One-true-the-other-a-whitewash-1FQQsmPzXZS/p.html

Although legends of giant creatures appear from time to time, Lake Kanas in Xinjiang is mostly quiet. The lake is located near the far northern tip of Xinjiang and China's borders with Russia, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia. The color of the lake changes with the seasons, light conditions, and temperature differences between morning and evening, offering visitors a constantly evolving visual experience.
