China maintains that a peaceful resolution of the Iran nuclear issue through political and diplomatic means is the only viable option, and opposes the threat of force, the use of sanctions and the application of pressure, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Tuesday.

Guo made the remarks in response to the UN Security Council's failure to adopt the draft resolution for a technical extension of Resolution 2231 that was tabled by China and Russia.

Guo noted that the United States' unilateral withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is the root cause of today's crisis. China calls on the United States and European countries to show political sincerity, make greater diplomatic efforts, return the Iran nuclear issue to a path of political and diplomatic settlement, and prevent the situation from escalating further.

"To deal with the triple planetary crisis of biodiversity loss, climate change and air pollution, it needs concerted action. It needs the convergence of public-private partnerships. It needs political will," said Siddharth Chatterjee, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in China, in an interview as he witnessed China’s environmental protection achievements in recent years. In this interview, he also encouraged all countries across the world to embrace the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework as a call to action to deal with biodiversity loss.

Noting the strong support of China as a member state to advance and accelerate the UN80 Initiative, Siddharth said that the UN80 Initiative is a beacon of hope which demonstrates that we’ve been able to avoid wars. We’ve been able to provide food and immunization under some of the most difficult circumstances, but the time has come for the UN to change along with its membership.

The Global Governance Initiative (GGI)—espousing the purely positive principles of sovereign equality, abiding by international rule of law, multilateralism, the people-centered approach, and taking real actions—is not formed in opposition to the existing international system or even the U.S. itself, said Josef Gregory Mahoney, a professor of politics and international relations at East China Normal University.

In other words, the GGI is reformist, it’s neither revisionist nor committed quixotically to an unsustainable status quo. Rather, it’s dedicated to strengthening the architecture of global governance to serve the interests of all nations, including the U.S.
