Eight light-minutes is the distance between the Sun and the Earth. Founded in 2016 by a small group of editors and hardcore sci-fi lovers, like the sunlight nurturing life on earth, we aim to make science fiction the light of everyday life.

Had an amazing weekend at Comiday — the biggest ACG fan convention in Southwest China! 🙌

Spotted a few awesome Doctor Who cosplayers, sold loads of books, and held a launch event for our new esports-themed sci-fi novel.
Also received many adorable little gifts from fellow Whovians. 💙

The whole event was such a blast — loved exploring, loved chatting with everyone, and we’re definitely coming back next time!

Call for short videos from global readers: 10th anniversary of The Three-Body Problem's cosmic echoes

2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the international publication of Liu Cixin’s Three-Body series. Chinadaily.com.cn launches the "10th Anniversary of The Three-Body Problem’s Cosmic Echoes" – Call for Short Videos from Global Readers.

Under the theme "Sending Humanity’s Voice to the Cosmos", Chinadaily.com.cn invites participants worldwide to create short videos simulating "cosmic broadcasts", expressing tributes and reflections on The Three-Body Problem. Exciting news! Baoshu‘s work “Three Tastings of the Delicacy” has officially been published in both English and Japanese.

The Japanese edition『美食三品』was featured in the Tokyo Sogensha’s magazine『纸鱼の手帖』(Bookworm's Note Vol. 21), beautifully translated by the renowned Japanese author and translator 立原透耶 Touya Tachihara .🥰

Meanwhile, the English version “Three Tastings of the Delicacy” was published in the SFRA Review, thanks to the brilliant translation by Xueting C. Ni, a celebrated British-Chinese author, editor, and translator.🥰

The original Chinese version debuted in the 13th issue of Galasy’s Edge（《银河边缘》）, a collaboration between 8LM and New Star Press, and was nominated for the 2024 Hugo Award for Best Short Story. We also later released a collection of Baoshu’s works, named after this very story.

Huge thanks to two brilliant translators for bringing this beautiful work to even more readers around the world! 🎉📚

Our amazing translator, Luo Yanli, recently became a sensation on Chinese social media after her live interpretation at a traditional Chinese medicine clinic during "Speed’s Trip to Chengdu." Her exceptional translation skills caught the attention of netizens, who couldn't help but crown her “the GOAT of translation.” 🙌

A graduate of Peking University’s Philosophy Department, Ms. Luo has translated a ton of award-winning and nominated sci-fi and fantasy works. To date, her translated works have already topped a whopping million words! 💥

She’s worked on projects for Eight Light Minutes, translating works by iconic sci-fi masters like Robert Sheckley, Brian Aldiss, and Allen Steele. Her translations are known for their fluency and elegance, and have earned glowing praise from readers.

And at sci-fi conferences in China? She's always there, taking the pulse of her friends in the community and offering some spot-on advice.🥰

Five years ago, an old friend, Mike Resnick, a brilliant science fiction author, editor, lifelong sci-fi fan, and founder of Galaxy’s Edge magazine, left us forever.

Resnick’s death is a great loss to the science fiction community. Not only did he contribute greatly to the field of sci-fi literature as an author and editor, but he also influenced countless sci-fi fans and writers by bringing up new people.

Galaxy’s Edge Chinese edition has curated A Tribute Issue to Mike Resnick to meet our readers. In the upcoming issue 021, seven Resnick stories are included, as well as eulogies to Resnick by many renowned professionals.

Here we share a video interview with Resnick conducted in 2018 by Regina Kanyu Wang on behalf of our team.

Resnick‘s original intention of founding Galaxy’s Edge magazine, Writer Children, coincides with our idea - to help new writers in sci-fi circles reach their career milestones. At the same time, Resnick’s aesthetics for sci-fi is exactly what our Chinese editorial team is sticking to, looking for sci-fi works that resonate with the times and share a sense of wonder with readers.

With the rock-solid 📖 Chinese Science Fiction: An Oral History as its base, it stands there like a champ, just as fabulous as the TARDIS hovering above. It's a sight that screams stability and pure awesomeness! 🤭

Douban, China's most popular rating platform for books, films, tv series, games, theatre and music, just announced their 🏆 2024 Book of the Year List yesterday. Among them, in the field of sci-fi/fantasy literature, 3 of the 10 books that won awards were published by us:

3rd place: Gu Shi's 📖 2181 Overture
5th place: D**g Xinyuan's 📖 Bianhe and Jade
10th place: Xia Sang's 📖 Orpheus' Marathon

Last year we had The Best of Greg Egan on the list, and this year's three are all original sci-fi by Chinese authors. It's our greatest joy as editors to see these great new authors achieve honours.

We will have more original Chinese sci-fi works coming out in 2025, and we look forward to the opportunity for sci-fi fans in more countries to read these works from China in the future!
