Did you know that Shin Hye Sun experience the "The Agony of the Unread Resume" by going SOLO?

Because she had no agency, Shin Hye-sun had to act as her own manager, PR team, secretary, and driver.

Shin Hye-sun knew she wanted to act ever since she watched the classic drama Autumn in My Heart (2000) as a young girl.
She prepared meticulously, attending a performing arts high school and majoring in Film Art at Sejong University.

However, after graduation, the reality of the industry hit her like a wall. She didn't even have a manager or an agency.
She printed out hundreds of copies of her profile and resume, physically traveling from agency to agency across Seoul just to drop them off.

She didn't just mail them. To save on postage and ensure they actually crossed the threshold of entertainment companies, she spent months physically traveling around Seoul’s entertainment hubs (like Gangnam, Yeouido, and Mapo).
She walked from office building to office building, pitching herself to front-desk receptionists and security guards, asking them to hand-deliver her resume to casting directors.

The hardest part wasn't failing auditions; it was that nobody would even grant her an audition. Her resumes were routinely tossed in the trash or ignored by secretaries.
For years, she was stuck in a loop of waiting for a phone call that never came, experiencing a prolonged period of forced unemployment and obscurity.

In interviews, Shin Hye-sun highlighted a painful catch that nearly broke her spirit: "You need an agency to get an audition, but you need to show acting credits from auditions to get signed by an agency."

Because she was independent, she was locked out of the official casting pipelines. Major broadcasting networks (KBS, SBS, MBC) rarely hold completely open calls; they send character briefs directly to established management agencies. For nearly three years after graduating university, her daily routine was defined entirely by waiting. The psychological exhaustion didn’t come from being told "no" at an audition—it came from the total silence of never being allowed in the room to begin with.

Her obsession with breaking through was anchored heavily in her childhood adoration of Won Bin in Autumn in My Heart (2000). She admitted on television that as a middle schooler, she developed a fierce, innocent determination that the only way she could ever meet Won Bin in real life was to become a successful actress.

When she was trapped in those years of forced obscurity, that childhood dream became a double-edged sword. She had explicitly prepared her entire life for this—attending the prestigious National High School of Traditional Arts and Sejong University's Film Art program—meaning she had no "Plan B". Giving up meant invalidating over a decade of single-minded preparation.

Breaking the Wall
Her agonizing period of isolation only ended when she caught wind of massive, open auditions for the youth drama School 2013. Because the production specifically needed dozens of background students, they opened the doors wider than usual.

Recognizing that this was her first real crack at the wall, she radically cut her hair into a sharp, distinct style before stepping into the audition room just to force the casting directors to look at her. She ultimately beat out hundreds of independent hopefuls for a minor, unnamed student role—finally turning her unread resume into an active screen credit.
