In 2021, Formula 1 cars had no mandatory maximum wheelbase limit under the technical regulations.
This lack of a strict cap permitted teams to choose between a shorter wheelbase for better agility or a longer one for improved underfloor downforce.
While no strict maximum was enforced that year, the cars were generally very long; the Mercedes W12 was a particularly prominent example, with some sources estimating it at around 3,720 mm.
By contrast, the 2026 regulations introduce a shorter wheelbase intended to make the cars more responsive in slow-speed corners and on tight tracks like Monaco.
The 2026 power units also removed the MGU-H and shift to a 50/50 split between internal combustion and electric power, utilizing 100% sustainable fuels.
Furthermore, unlike in 2021, the 2026 cars features active aerodynamics on both the front and rear wings. This allows drivers to switch between “low drag” for the straights and “high downforce” for the corners.
