So.. I turned 29 last week! It was also the first time in 11 years (since I turned 18) that I had celebrated it with my entire family. I felt rather introspective this week so I made this video and recorded some of my reflections.

My 20s (thus far) certainty did not turn out the way I had planned. The tides changed more times than I could count and everything I had thought was certain turned out differently than I expected. I moved 13 or 14 times (I think? I've lost count.) I experienced lots of love and loss, grief and agony, joy and wonder. I realized that while you can't stop the waves from happening, you can learn to move with them. They may not take you in the direction that you had planned, but they will take you exactly where you are meant to be.

Every time I tell someone what I do nowadays, and how work, life and play has become one for me, they look at me with surprise/or an almost disbelief. πŸ‘€

Yes, I travel, meet people, listen to stories, film, interview, consolidate my research and findings, edit them into documentaries and podcast episodes, and then share them with the world. βœˆοΈπŸ”ŽπŸ“πŸŽ₯πŸŽ™β˜ΊοΈThat is my work, passion, and life, and I LOVE IT. It’s taken me more than a decade to get here, and the journey has been anything but linear, but I just wanted to say that it was all worth is. πŸ’™

Also, as much as I enjoy the actual trips and exploration, I also spend a lot of time on my own, learning and reflecting. And every moment is special and can be importation, whether I’m on the road or not. Even when I’m on the plane or train by myself, or at home/office working on scripts and editing, I feel joyful. My joy mostly comes from waking up and feeling like my most authentic self; unapologetically myself. πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Two days ago, I had an intimate and meaningful conversation with my parents and brother, where we all shared what makes us most content. For me, that was an easy question to answer: to wake up everyday feeling alive, full of vitality, and excited for the adventures ahead while being who I want to be.

For me, it’s never been about the destination nor end result, but the journey itself and to be able to enjoy it fully. To be present. To know that I am true to myself, living by my values and beliefs, inside and out. To fight for what I believe in. To connect, to live passionately, and compassionately. To be what I am, to live what I was meant to live, to want to sound like no one else, and to yield to the blossoms dictated to my heart: this is what I want.” πŸ’›

Before I dive into my experiences here in Houhai Bay, Hainan, I want to briefly touch upon the topic of cultural authenticity and identity. How do we determine if something is culturally authentic when we travel to a new place? Let's talk about what "culture" means and how that is different from "cu...

For the past 10 years, I’ve moved about 20 times. Across continents, countries, and cities. What I realized is that Home is a feeling. It’s a heartbeat. It’s the people, moments and memories that shape you. Wherever you roam, wherever you wander, you will always infinitely belong. Because home is not found within the walls of a house, it’s tucked within the walls of your chest β€” home is where your heart is.
