【纪念中国人民抗日战争暨世界反法西斯战争胜利80周年】

陕甘宁边区和晋察冀、晋冀鲁豫、晋绥、山东等敌后抗日根据地开展大生产运动后，人民负担大大减轻，军民生活明显改善。1942年到1944年的三年中，陕甘宁边区共开垦荒地200多万亩。大生产运动不仅支持了敌后的艰苦抗战，而且积累起一些经济建设的经验，培养了广大干部与群众同甘共苦、艰苦奋斗的优良作用。图为大生产运动中，八路军指战员在太行山上开荒。

【80th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War】

The great production campaign in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region and in the resistance base areas behind enemy lines in Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei, Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan, Shanxi-Suiyuan, Shandong, and other base areas was highly successful. The tax burden on the people was greatly alleviated, and the material welfare of both soldiers and civilians was markedly improved. During the three years from 1942 through 1944, more than two million mu of wasteland was brought under cultivation in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region. The great production campaign supported the arduous struggle in the enemy’s rear areas, and at the same time enabled the Party to gain experience in economic development. Among cadres, a good style of work defined by standing with the people in weal and woe and struggling tenaciously alongside them was developed. The photo shows that officers and soldiers of the Eighth Route Army reclaimed land in the Taihang Mountains during the great production campaign.

在大生产运动中，中央领导人以身作则，起带头作用。毛泽东在自己窑洞下面开垦了一块地，种上了菜；朱德组织一个生产小组，开垦菜地三亩。1943年，中央直属机关和中央警卫团举行纺线比赛，任弼时夺得第一名，周恩来被评为纺线能手。中央领导人的行动，成为大生产运动的鼓舞力量，延安党政军学各界数万人投入大生产运动。图为机关干部在纺线。

In the great production campaign, the leaders of the Central Committee also carried out activities to lead by example. Mao Zedong planted vegetables on a barren patch of land beneath his cave dwellings; Zhu De organized a production group to cultivate three mu (1 mu =1/15 hectare) of vegetables plots. In a spinning competition hosted by the agencies under the CPC Central Committee and the Central Guards Regiment in 1943, Ren Bishi won first prize, and Zhou Enlai was awarded the title of “expert spinner”. The actions of the Central Committee leaders inspired tens of thousands of people from the Party, government army, schools, and other circles in Yan’an to join the great production campaign. 在克服严重的物质生活困难的过程中，抗日根据地的大生产运动发挥了决定性的作用。军队、政府机关和学校发展自给经济，是抗日根据地大生产运动中的一个创造。1941年春，八路军第三五九旅开进南泥湾实行军垦屯田。他们发扬自力更生、奋发图强的精神，开展劳动竞赛，涌现出了许多模范人物。昔日荒凉的南泥湾变成了“粮食堆满仓，麦田翻金浪，猪牛羊肥壮”的“陕北的好江南”。图为三五九旅官兵在南泥湾打谷场打场。

In an effort to overcome grave material difficulties, a great production campaign was launched in resistance base areas and exerted a decisive role. Economic self-sufficiency of the army, government organizations, and schools was one of the outcomes of the great production campaign in the resistance base areas. In the spring of 1941, the 359th Brigade of the Eighth Route Army moved to Nanniwan to reclaim wasteland and plant grain there. Relying on their own efforts, they launched a labor emulation drive. Competitions were hosted between companies, platoons, squads, and individual members, leading to the emergence of a number of role models who were dedicated and hardworking. The brigade’s officers and men transformed the desolate tract into a land resembling the thriving areas south of the lower Yangtze, with barns that were full of grains, fields covered with golden wheat, and strong and healthy livestock. The World’s Best-Preserved WWII Allied Prisoners Camp

The Shenyang WWII Allied Prisoners Camp was a facility established by Japan during World War II to detain allied prisoners of war captured in the Pacific theater. It was then known as the “Mukden POW Camp”. This site remains the best-preserved among the 18 POW camps established by Japan across its home islands and occupied territories during WWII.

From November 11th, 1942, to August 15th, 1945, this camp held over 2,000 allied prisoners of war from the United States, Britain, Australia, the Netherlands, Canada and France. During their nearly three years of imprisonment, the prisoners endured severe hardships including disease, extreme cold, starvation, and physical abuse, resulting in approximately 260 deaths. It became known as the “Auschwitz of the East”.

Today, the Former Site of the Shenyang WWII Allied Prisoners Camp stands as a historical testament to the imprisonment and maltreatment of allied prisoners by Japanese forces, and to the collective resistance against Japanese fascism by China and allied nations such as the United States and Britain. It serves as a vital historical landmark that educates people about remembering the past, opposing war, and cherishing peace.
