Al-Qata'iʿ, Egyptian lost heritage: audio guide towards enhancing a conservative interpretation experience
Mohamed W. Fareed & Mohamed Amer
The valorisation of materialistic and visual cultural components overlooks the significance of other lost components recognized at the designated UNESCO World Heritage site. This research critically examines the use of audio guides as tools for heritage interpretation, investigating their impact on shaping visitor perceptions. Focusing on al-Qata’iʿ, as a lost heritage case study, this study challenges traditional approaches to heritage valorisation. It explores the tension between conservative interpretation methods and their potential to increase cultural identity and memory, both for the local community and visitors.

The valorisation of materialistic and visual cultural components overlooks the significance of other lost components recognized at the designated UNESCO World Heritage site. This practice leads to the deterioration rather than enhancement of history, which could endanger authentic cultural knowledge...

A potential toolbox for improving the accessibility process in historic villages
Luigi Biocca
Accessibility, defined as inclusiveness in the access to and use of the built environment, is a complex process that involves several factors from multidisciplinary sectors. Thus, it is a prominent topic for heritage and cultural, tourist, social and economic regeneration and exploitation. Many historic villages in Italy offer potential heritage value for greater tourism attractiveness. This paper suggests a toolbox for differentiated accessibility levels. A case study identifies an analysis process of four activities, leading to a methodological scheme for determining accessibility options. The toolbox scheme can guide the accessibility process and steps towards alternative solutions on the basis of selected cultural values.

The politics of remembrance in China: the commemoration and heritagisation of colonial prisons in Qingdao and Dalian
Beixi Sun & Barry Godfrey
In postcolonial China, where government authorities and heritage professionals assume supreme authority in determining what relics of the colonial past should be kept (or not) and how their heritage values should be interpreted to be ‘correctly’ understood by the general public, the colonial prison has been used as a place for invoking the collective memories of the selected part of the colonial past in China. This paper looks at the heritage-making process of the two colonial prison museums in Dalian and Qingdao, with the aim of unpacking the power issues surrounding the heritage making in postcolonial China by investigating how the past associated with colonialisation has been picked, edited, and interpreted by the audience. This study elucidates the instrumental role of prison museums in China and further strengthens the notion that heritage is a process of memory and construction.

Heritage is not only a channel to observe or experience history and the past but also a way to remember or forget. In postcolonial China, where government authorities and heritage professionals assume supreme authority in determining what relics of the colonial past should be kept (or not) and how t...

Diasporic communities’ participation in built heritage management: a systematic literature review
Yan Zhou, Lidwine Spoormans & Ana Pereira Roders
Community participation in heritage management is increasing. Actively participating communities, groups, and individuals can help identify and protect values and attributes that convey these values and guide sustainable management. However, how can diasporic communities participate in built heritage management? In addition to existing studies on community participation in built heritage management, this systematic literature review draws from 106 scholarly articles and distils how diasporic communities participate in built heritage management. The findings can be considered, referenced, and adapted for future participatory built heritage management that engages diasporic communities.

Leveraging social media for resilient cultural heritage: a people-centred conceptual framework for community engagement and crisis response
Manal Ginzarly & Jacques Teller
This paper develops a people-centred conceptual framework that explores the intersection of CH, community resilience, and digital tools, drawing on emerging theories in heritage and resilience studies, particularly in relation to digital practices. The framework advocates for more inclusive and locally contextualised practices by engaging communities in the co-construction of heritage values and enhancing multivocality through digital platforms. It highlights the transformative role of digitally mediated heritage practices, from digitisation and crowdsourcing to active community participation in crisis response.

In the face of climate change, cultural heritage (CH) is vulnerable to risks, yet it is a powerful source of resilience. As efforts in climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction progress, CH plays a crucial role in strengthening communities’ capacity to recover and adapt. International ...

Book Review: Heritage building conservation: sustainable and digital modelling
Sessito Vincentius Sapay, Kusuma Putri Wahyu Abadi, Gede Chandra Wira Kusuma & Norma Julia Farah Islamiaty
As the 21st century placed heritage preservation issues under the limelight of growing urbanisation and global warming, this collection of essays calls for a reconsideration of our architectural heritage and emphasises the key role of conservation in the process of a technologically advanced, sustainable future. The work explicated under the subheading Heritage Building Conservation: Sustainable and Digital Modelling is the culmination of exhaustive investigation and intellectually rewarding work providing for the very first time complete analysis of contemporary conservation practice. Strong emphasis is placed upon the adoption of the use of digital recording processes, the adoption of the practice of sustainability, and the advancement of interdisciplinary competencies, thus contributing extensively towards the field.

Creative placemaking at heritage sites between material improvements and selective memory: the case of Wudadao in Tianjin
Shengkang Fu & Giulio Verdini
Wudadao, the former British concession area of Tianjin, has undergone significant regeneration over the past decade, becoming a key urban tourism destination. This regeneration, driven by a successful creative placemaking strategy, effectively protected urban heritage, reviving the glory of the 1920s foreign architecture. However, in this paper we argue that these achievements have come at a cost to the existing local community. Drawing on interviews with local authorities and civil society, historical analysis, and field observations, this paper aims to reveal the material and symbolic impact of urban regeneration on Wudadao inhabitants and their stories.

Built heritage of health: Italian hospital’s inward/outward urban history and relocation dilemma Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico case study
Pilar Maria Guerrieri
Hospitals, health centres and asylum buildings fall within the sphere of so-called health architecture, places oriented towards health promotion and prevention. Architectural health structures need to be kept modern and up to date, and heritage buildings are generally considered unsuitable. The case of the Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico in Milan is particularly emblematic of the inwards/outwards hospital relocation phenomena that occurred around Italy during the 20th century, and it can compellingly trigger a debate over the conservation/innovation challenges faced by the built heritage of health.

Conservation of archaeological sites in the face of urban sprawl: the case of Independencia, Peru
Cleber Dionis, Mirtha Cristobal, Nataly Álvarez & Cristian Yarasca-Aybar
In Lima (the capital of Peru), archaeological sites are constantly being threatened by accelerated urban expansion. This study examines Independencia (a district in northern Lima), where 95% of archaeological areas have been encroached upon due to inadequate planning and conservation policies. Focusing on four key archaeological sites (Cerro La Cruz, Cerro San Jerónimo, Pampa de Cueva, and San Jerónimo), this study employed a comprehensive pathological analysis to assess the extent and causes of deterioration.

Urban Heritage Sociocultural Impact Assessment (UHSCIA): scale development and psychometric validation
Shahim Abdurahiman
This study presents the development and psychometric validation of an urban heritage sociocultural impact assessment (UHSCIA) scale to evaluate the impact of urban development projects on the sociocultural fabric of historic urban precincts. The scale was designed to facilitate a heritage-led approach to urban development, ensuring the preservation and enhancement of urban heritage assets. The study adopts a mixed-method grounded theory to prepare the item pool and construct a framework.

Chinese commemorative practices in an English graveyard – observations on the Elswick gravestones
Bruce Davenport, Yuan Zhang & Andrew Law
This paper explores the contemporary use, for commemorative purposes, of Chinese heritage situated outside of China, in the built environment of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (United Kingdom). The focus of the paper is the recent history of five gravestones of Chinese sailors who came to Newcastle in the 1880s as part of a delegation to receive cruisers that had been designed and built for the Qing Dynasty’s Beiyang Fleet. The restoration of the gravestone in 2016–19 situated the gravestones as historic artefacts marking the birth of the Beiyang Fleet. Drawing on material evidence of recent commemorative reuse of the gravestones by contemporary Chinese subjects, the paper considers their on-going role in fostering national identities.
