Did you know that Hokkien, or Minnanhua, is one of the most widely spoken Chinese dialects—or fangyan—in the world? 🌏

Spoken by over 45 million people globally, this dialect originates from the southeastern region of the province known as . With its gentle, flowing sound, Minnanhua is often seen as a reflection of the region’s laid-back attitude.

Its roots trace all the way back to the Northern and Southern dynasties (420 – 589), and to this day, it still features many loanwords—like sap-bûn (soap) and ko-pi (coffee)—borrowed from Malay.
