Chiribiquete National Park, Colombia: an Enchanted Amazon Wonderland

Hidden deep within the heart of the Colombian Amazon lies Chiribiquete National Park, a vast and mystical wilderness that has remained largely untouched by human civilization. With its dramatic tepuis, meandering rivers, dense rainforests, and rich biodiversity, Chiribiquete is often referred to as the “Crown Jewel of Colombia.” This protected area is a sanctuary for wildlife, a living museum of indigenous rock art, and a place where the forces of nature have sculpted a breathtaking landscape.

Chiribiquete, spanning over 4.3 million acres, is one of the largest national parks in Colombia and South America. It was established in 1989 and later declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018. The park is named after the massive sandstone table mountains known as tepuis that dominate its skyline, creating an otherworldly atmosphere that has captivated explorers and adventurers for generations.

Colombia’s Petro Meets Pope Leo XIV in Rome

The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, held a private audience with the newly elected Pope Leo XIV in Rome. Migration, the climate crisis, peace in Colombia and the world, as well as an invitation for the Pontiff to visit the country, were the main topics discussed during the private audience held this Monday with Pope Leo XIV at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City.

The meeting lasted just over 20 minutes and was among the first the newly elected Pope held with a Latin American president following the Mass marking the start of his papacy, celebrated yesterday, Sunday, in Rome.

Petro arrived in Rome on Saturday on a flight from his long official trip to China, in a week full of important events, such as Colombia’s entry into the Chinese-led Belt and Road Initiative and the signing of a trade alliance with the Asian giant.

Moniquira: The Sweet City of Colombia

Moniquira, located in the Boyaca Department, is a natural and gastronomic paradise often hailed as “The Sweet City of Colombia.” Its claim to fame? Being home to some of the country’s top factories producing two of Colombia’s most beloved treats: “bocadillos” (guava candy) and “panelitas” (milk fudge). The town is also graced with natural pools, wells, waterfalls, and meandering rivers.

The name ‘Moniquirá’, meaning “bathing place” in the indigenous Chibcha language, hints at the stunning natural aquatic landscapes formed by streams and rivers like Moniquira, Pomeca, and Suarez. Thousands of tourists flock here to marvel at the majestic waters of Colombia’s mountains.
