Throughout maritime history, the ocean has been both a source of life and a stage for haunting legends. Tales of sirens—mythical beings with hypnotic voices—describe an irresistible enchantment that could drive even the most seasoned sailors to madness, compelling them to leap into the depths in search of a fatal embrace. However, reality often merged with myth in unexpected ways. During the Age of Discovery, many Spanish explorers, weary and dehydrated after months at sea, reported sightings of these legendary creatures. In truth, they were often observing manatees; though far from the slender beauties of folklore, their mammalian silhouettes and the way they cradled their young in the water led sailors like Christopher Columbus to claim they had seen mermaids, though he noted with some disappointment that they were "not as beautiful as they are painted."
