Logging Scam? Over 550 Logs Abandoned as Company Disappears in Fear

By: D. Abraham Cooper Sr, Grand Gedeh County Reporter

KONOBO DISTRICT, GRAND GEDEH COUNTY, July 14, 2025 – In a stunning turn of events, a logging company operating in the southeastern forests of Liberia has mysteriously vanished, abandoning over 550 harvested logs and leaving the local community in turmoil.
Tensions are running high in Boundary Town, Konobo District, following the sudden disappearance of Horizons Logging Company, just one year into a five-year agreement that had promised development, jobs, and profit-sharing for the community. The company’s exit has sparked accusations of fraud, environmental damage, and economic sabotage.
Town Chief Ophelia B. Gbayou, speaking to our reporter over the weekend, described the company’s actions as “a betrayal of community trust.” Despite assurances of major development under the terms of their Social Agreement, the only contributions Horizons Logging reportedly made were the construction of a single public toilet and the installation of one hand pump.
“They came, cut down our trees, and gave us no benefit,” Chief Gbayou lamented. “Then they quietly came back, took their machines—after we permitted them—leaving our forest destroyed and more than 550 logs lying on the ground.”

BREAKING: Ivanhoe Pressures IMCC for Sunday Concession Signing Amid US Trip – “Something’s Not Right,” Observers Warn

Monrovia, Liberia, July 6, 2025: - Liberia’s Inter Ministerial Concessions Committee (IMCC) is being rushed into a major concession agreement with Ivanhoe Liberia formerly HPX on a Sunday, a non-working day, just hours before President Joseph Boakai departs for the United States.
Sources close to the process say the timing appears unusually aggressive, with speculation about hidden conditions or diplomatic strings potentially tied to the President’s scheduled US meetings.
The CDC government did similar thing with secret signing deal with HPX and it backfired heavily.
Civil society actors, and policy insiders are sounding the alarm, calling the move suspicious and demanding full transparency before any deal is finalized. “Why the rush? Why on a Sunday? And why just before the President travels? Something doesn’t smell right,” one senior analyst told reporters.
Media outlet DN News reported that its reporter and the entire Liberian Media community was denied access to the secret signing on Sunday.
All eyes are now on the IMCC as many warn that pushing through such a high-stakes agreement under pressure and behind closed doors could undermine public trust and compromise Liberia’s long-term interests.

Sanniquellie, Nimba Liberia: - In a significant step toward improving regional connectivity and unlocking economic potential, the Sanniquellie Airstrip is poised for a major transformation as ground was broken on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, for a six-month runway renovation project.
The groundbreaking ceremony was led by Samaritan's Purse International Relief in collaboration with the Nimba County Administration and the Government of Liberia.
The project, fully funded by Samaritan's Purse International Relief, comes with an estimated investment of $30,000 USD and aims to restore the airstrip to a functional state capable of supporting future regional air traffic—creating new avenues for economic activity, trade, and emergency health access in northern Liberia.
Speaking at the ceremony, Madam Kou Meapeh Gono, a prominent local leader, hailed the initiative as a "timely and brilliant intervention" that will bring pride and progress to the people of Nimba County and Liberia at large. She underscored the historical significance of the airstrip and called on the people of Sanniquellie, through City Mayor Z. Zuamien Zenor and Commissioner Mary Nyan Gonlepa, to take ownership of the facility's upkeep.

Empowering Grassroots Leadership for Sustainable Growth: ArcelorMittal Liberia Trains Community Leaders Across Mining Regions

Nimba, B**g, and Grand Bassa Counties, Liberia – In a significant step toward promoting inclusive development and sustainable governance, the Department of Sustainability and External Relations at ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) has successfully concluded a series of high-impact leadership and governance training workshops across key mining communities in Nimba, B**g, and Grand Bassa Counties.
The week-long training initiative was rolled out simultaneously in Yekepa, Camp 4, Zolowee, Zuluyee, and Bunadin, targeting local leaders, Town Council members, and representatives of Local Consultative Forums (LCFs). The objective was to strengthen local governance structures, enhance leadership capacity, and deepen community understanding of decentralization policies under Liberia’s Local Government Act of 2018.
In Yekepa, thirteen Camp Masters forming the Town Council participated in intensive sessions led by Sam Gotomo, a seasoned governance expert from Sunglow Enterprise. Discussions centered on key pillars of effective local governance, community leadership ethics, and the legal frameworks that guide decentralized decision-making in Liberia.

Building Futures from the Ground Up: TIHS-Liberia Champions Early Childhood Education in Rural Liberia

B**g County, Liberia – June 23, 2025: - In Liberia’s most remote villages, early childhood education is not just a need, it is a lifeline. Yet, for countless children across rural communities, school remains out of reach due to overwhelming barriers: a lack of trained, government-paid teachers, crumbling infrastructure, poverty, and the absence of sustainable support.
Amid these challenges, one grassroots organization is making an extraordinary impact. Since its founding in 2018, The Institute for Human & Services Liberia Inc. (TIHS-Liberia) has become a beacon of hope in underserved regions, most notably in Gbinsyta, Boryama Clan, Lower B**g County, where it constructed a school and launched education access programs that now touch lives in B**g and Nimba Counties.
“For many children, especially girls, sponsorship is the only bridge to education,” says Mr. Papay S. Kamara, Executive Director of TIHS-Liberia. “They’re fighting more than poverty; they’re fighting tradition, inequality, and the indifference that surrounds them.”
