Ministry of Health Establishes Six Youth-Friendly Corners in Bomi to Boost Adolescent Reproductive Health
Bomi County, Liberia –
------------------------------------------------------------
In an effort to enhance adolescent reproductive health services in Bomi County, the Family Health Division at the Ministry of Health has launched the establishment of six Youth-Friendly Corners in selected health facilities across the region.
The initiative, led by the Family Health Division, is part of a broader strategy to promote reproductive health and reduce teenage pregnancy and maternal mortality through improved access to family planning and health education.
According to Madam Leemue Walker, Coordinator for Adolescent Reproductive Health at the Ministry, the Youth-Friendly Corners are designed to provide safe, confidential, and welcoming spaces where adolescents and young people can access vital reproductive health information and services.
“These centers are created to break down the barriers that young people face when seeking care, such as stigma, lack of privacy, and limited knowledge,” Madam Walker explained.
She noted that the Youth-Friendly Corners will offer services including counseling on sexual and reproductive health, family planning, HIV testing, treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and other adolescent-specific health services.
The centers will be equipped with materials and amenities such as generators, televisions, chairs, tables, and buckets, along with youth-focused activities aimed at engaging and educating young people.
Madam Walker emphasized that this move is aligned with the Ministry’s national plan to empower Liberian youth with the knowledge and support needed to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.
Meanwhile, Bomi County Reproductive Health Officer, Madam Fatu Sheriff, commended the Ministry for the initiative. She described it as a timely and impactful effort, pledging her office’s full commitment to monitor the centers once operational.
Also speaking, Bomi County Health Officer, Dr. Ennet Brima-Davis, lauded the Ministry of Health for what she termed a “great and much-needed step.” She stressed that the initiative will help curb teenage pregnancy and improve access to accurate reproductive health information among adolescents in the county.
Dr. Brima-Davis concluded by highlighting that the establishment of Youth-Friendly Corners will foster better communication, knowledge sharing, and proactive youth engagement in addressing issues that affect their health and future.
