Editing is a fundamental and essential part of digital photography.
If you shoot in RAW format (the industry standard), the camera captures a vast amount of data, but it does not process the image to make it look ‘appealing’ right away.
Editing is necessary to ‘develop’ that file and turn it into the image you had in mind when you took the shot.
Although sensors are incredible, they have physical limitations. Sometimes, to save a highlight (the sky, for example), you must sacrifice shadows, or vice versa. Editing allows you to recover information from those areas that the sensor captured, but which are not immediately visible.
