BOGDAN ŽIVKOVIĆ, "TITO’S CANOSSA OR PYRRHIC VICTORY? YUGOSLAVIA AND THE 1976 CONFERENCE OF COMMUNIST AND WORKERS PARTIES OF EUROPE"
🔹 This paper explores Yugoslavia’s unexpected decision to participate in the 1976 Conference of Communist and Workers Parties of Europe, analysing the broader foreign policy context that shaped its engagement. The Yugoslav leadership viewed the conference as an opportunity to assert their core foreign policy principles within the European communist movement. Closely aligned with the Italian Communist Party, Belgrade played a key role in shaping the final document, which formally promoted the autonomy of national communist parties. The conference was widely seen as a success for the so-called autonomist bloc, but this victory proved temporary. The article concludes that while the conference was a symbolic milestone for Yugoslav foreign policy, it ultimately represented a Pyrrhic victory in the broader struggle for autonomy within the communist movement.

LUKA FILIPOVIĆ, "FROM INSUFFICIENT TO DANGEROUS: CHANGING ATTITUDES OF YUGOSLAV COMMUNISTS ON THE CONCEPT OF A HISTORIC COMPROMISE OF THE ITALIAN COMMUNIST PARTY 1972–1980"
🔹 This paper examines the changes of the attitudes expressed by the leading Yugoslav communists about the concept of a historic compromise as defined by their Italian counterparts from 1972 to 1980. It aims at bringing these constantly evolving attitudes, closely related to the internal ideological changes within the League of Communists of Yugoslavia, into correlation with the gradual abandonment of the party policies adopted in the endeavor to influence the development of cooperation between the Italian Communist Party and Christian Democracy. In order to position these changes in an adequate historical and social context, this paper relies on comparing the results of archival research with those found within a wide spectrum of relevant literature from various fields of social science and the humanities.

TATJANA MILOŠEVIĆ, "AT THE CROSSROADS OF NATIONAL INTEREST: TITO AND THE JOHNSON ADMINISTRATION IN 1964"
🔹 During the presidency of John F. Kennedy, U.S. policy toward Yugoslavia was based on the concept of “soft power,” that is, the provision of economic and political assistance aimed at encouraging liberalization and distancing the country from the Soviet sphere of influence. Despite the socialist character of the Yugoslav regime, the American administration demonstrated pragmatism and a willingness to cooperate, with the objective of drawing Yugoslavia closer to the West. Lyndon Johnson’s accession to power marked a shift toward a more realist model of foreign policy, grounded in the theories of political realism and based on conditioning assistance on the clear alignment of Yugoslavia’s foreign policy orientation with American strategic interests. Although the conceptual approach differed, the fundamental objective–preserving Yugoslavia’s independence and stability through support for Tito’s model of “independent communism” – remained unchanged. While economic and cultural cooperation remained stable, political relations became increasingly cautious on both sides. The United States maintained its skepticism toward Yugoslav communism, whereas Yugoslavia voiced ever more open criticism of American interventionist policies. Johnson’s policy preserved the basic framework of Kennedy’s approach, but with greater pragmatism and altered priorities. Yugoslav foreign policy remained flexible, balancing between the blocs and consistently relying on the principles of non-alignment throughout the Cold War.

OGNJEN TOMIĆ, "YUGOSLAVIA’S FOREIGN TRADE NETWORK IN ITALY DURING SWINGING SIXTIES AND LONG 1970S: STRUCTURAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL PROBLEMS"
🔹 The article explores the Yugoslav foreign trade network in Italy during the 1960s and 1970s, focusing on the institutional and organizational framework through which trade was conducted. The aim is to examine how state institutions, foreign branches, and economic enterprises interacted in practice, and to what extent they succeeded in building a coherent system of cooperation. Special attention is given to conflicts between producer and intermediary companies, the role of consulates and the embassy, and the effects of economic reforms such as the introduction of Basic Organizations of Associated Labor (OOUR). The analysis is based on archival documents from the Archive of Yugoslavia, consular correspondence, and internal reports of Yugoslav institutions operating in Italy.

SANJA PETROVIĆ TODOSIJEVIĆ, "TOWARDS THE TRANSNATIONAL: THE UNION OF PIONEERS OF YUGOSLAVIA AND THE CHILDREN'S INTERNATIONAL SUMMER VILLAGES CAMP, 1955–1988"
🔹 This paper aims to explore the intensive international cooperation between the Union of Pioneers of Yugoslavia (SPJ) and the Children’s International Summer Villages (CISV) organization between 1955 and 1988. The partnership established between Yugoslavia and one of the world’s most prominent international children’s organizations proved mutually significant, as Yugoslavia participated in at least twenty-five camps across twelve countries between 1962 and 1988. These camps enabled children from all regions of Yugoslavia to come into contact and form friendships with peers from fifty-six countries around the world. This study will analyze the historical development of the relationship between CISV and Yugoslav children's organizations responsible for the social organization and participation of children, the significance of CISV, and the role of Yugoslav educational policy in implementing peace-oriented initiatives, as well as the participation of Yugoslav delegations in CISV camps. The research is primarily based on the reports of the leaders of Yugoslav pioneer delegations who took part in CISV camps.

HARIS DAJČ, NIKOLA PANTELIĆ, "THE BANNING OF POLITICAL PARTIES IN ISRAEL 1948–2019"
🔹 The authors focused in the paper on the mechanism and cause for the banning of political parties in Israel from 1948 until 2019. The ability to restrict political freedoms in Israel is complicated and leaves the competent authorities with much room for action. Existing legislation foresees removing an unwanted political party practically at all levels, regardless of how established it is. If an oversight is made at the beginning of the political life of a non-democratic party and the competent authority registers it, the party may later be denied participation in elections or banned outright. The authors analyse the banning of both Jewish and Arab political parties from the 1960s until the 2010s. In the time of the prohibition of the List of Socialists, the institutions were alerted as the state was often in conflict with its neighbors. In the period after the Oslo Accord, the growth of the Jewish right-wing religious influence became a challenge from within society. During the period of stability of both political and security conditions, we could see higher tolerance towards political parties that threaten the state with their policies.

PÉTER VUKMAN, "TARGETED BY THE HUNGARIAN STATE SECURITY. SOUTH SLAVS AND ETHNIC HUNGARIANS FROM VOJVODINA IN THE BAJA TRIANGLE, 1948–1953"
🔹 The escalation of the Soviet–Yugoslav conflict had a fundamental impact on the South Slavic minorities in Hungary, too. They were generally regarded by the state security and law enforcement agencies as unreliable and as “Tito's fifth column.” The State Protection Authority (Államvédelmi Hatóság, ÁVH) began closely monitoring the villages of the Baja Triangle and the South Slavs living there. They were considered unreliable elements and it was assumed that because of their ethnicity, all of them would support Yugoslavia and the Yugoslav leaders in the conflict. However, their relations to the ÁVH were rather complex. This article highlights some aspects of this complex relationship in the so-called Baja Triangle border region, which had primary importance from a state security perspective. Based on Hungarian archival documents, this article attempts to reveal the criteria used and the tasks for which the South Slavs living here were to be recruited. Then, it examines the trials against South Slavs. It also focuses on those Hungarians who moved from Yugoslavia to Hungary in the final years of or shortly after World War II. As they originated from Yugoslavia, they were considered unreliable by the State Protection Authority just like the South Slavs. The article briefly touches upon their fate after 1953, too.

DANILO KOVAČ, "FROM EXPANSION TO RETREAT: THE CAUSES OF ITALY’S MILITARY WITHDRAWAL FROM CROATIA IN 1942"
🔹 Although Italy helped establish the Independent State of Croatia, until early 1942 it pursued political and military expansion at Croatia’s expense. In June 1942, however, this policy shifted abruptly, as Italy withdrew large parts of its troops from Croatia. This paper analyses the causes of this move, which had long-term consequences not only for Italians and Croatians, but also for the Partisans, Chetniks, and the conduct of the war in Croatia. It further examines Italian-Croatian-German negotiations, revealing both the nature of their alliance and the tensions between Italian military and civil authorities.

RATOMIR MILIKIĆ, MIOMIR GATALOVIĆ, "THE CAIRO AFFAIR IN LIGHT OF BRITISH DOCUMENTS"
🔹 Relying on already available and newly accessible British archival sources, as well as memoirs of some of the participants, the authors reconstruct the events surrounding the so-called Cairo Affair, with special emphasis on the position of some generals and the support they received from military circles in the United Kingdom. The attempted coup, known as the Cairo Affair, and the extent of British involvement in it, have not previously been fully described and analyzed.

RORY YEOMANS, "THE MULTIPLE LIVES OF SLAVICA FLESCH: SURVIVAL, MEMORY, AND RESTITUTION IN THE SHADOW OF THE HOLOCAUST"
🔹 This article examines strategies of survival, negotiation, and postwar restitution pursued by victims of state-sponsored violence in the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) through a microhistorical analysis of the correspondence of the mixed Serbian–Jewish Oklobdžija–Flesch family from Zagreb. Focusing in particular on the experiences of Slavica Oklobdžija, the study reconstructs how members of a middle-class household navigated racial legislation, administrative arbitrariness, and the ideological contradictions of the Ustaša regime in an effort to preserve their lives, property, and legal standing. The article highlights the ambiguities inherent in NDH racial policy, especially in cases involving mixed marriages, which challenged the regime’s binary antisemitic worldview and its nation-building project. Drawing on wartime and postwar correspondence with state institutions, the article also traces Slavica’s attempts to obtain restitution after 1945, offering insight into bureaucratic attitudes toward Holocaust survivors and the families of victims in socialist Yugoslavia. By foregrounding the lived experience of one family, the article contributes to broader debates on everyday survival under genocidal regimes, the limits of racial ideology in practice, and the contested place of the Holocaust and Jewish survivors in postwar Yugoslav society.
