Social media have entered the lives of almost every generation, including retirees, and, when it comes to news gathering, are threatening to “kill” traditional media.
Ordinary people confirm they use mostly Facebook but not only to communicate and entertain themselves, or just have fun, but to find out what is happening around them and what influences their lives as well.
Interviewees in the following vox populi made on july 14 2015, in the center of Nis (Serbia) are randomly chosen.
RadaTrifunovic (59) is retired and is using fb and Skype.
- I cannot remember the last time I bought or read newspaper. I do not watch Tv, have no local channels in my cable operator package… I inform myself exclusively via fb and I believe that the internet and social media are going to “kill” classic media, says Rada.
Milan Stojkovic (26) is a travelling salesman says he uses fb, but not a twitter.
- I use fb to get in contact with friends as well as for entertainment and getting the latest news. I use traditional media, but as for the news I rely more on the fb, says Milan.
Jelica Stojanovic (36), a travelling saleswomen uses social media, but only traditional media to watch news.
- I have a fb profile and use it to chat with sibilings, relatives and friends abroad. But when it comes to news, I watch Tv. When I come back home from work, I immediately turn on my TV and watch the news. I never use fb to “read” news.
Dejan Stanimirovic (24) ia a manager in a local paper recycling industry and says he never read or watch news, neither on traditional, nor new media.
- I have a fb profile and use it only to communicate to my friends. I never read news, even if my fb friends would share any, claims Dejan.
Ana Petrovic (22) is a student at the University of Nis.
- I use social media, fb, instagram mostly to get information about my studies, but for the news as well.
At he moment, ods are that the Facebook, twitter and other apps are winning the battle. But the war is not over ! After all, the social media coalition mhas never managight be dominanting and conquering Tv, radio or newspapers. But video has never managed to kill a radio star, nor the internet has totally subdues the book.
