We usually talk about our testers. Today, we’d like to introduce what powers them — our software.

It’s something we’re genuinely proud of.
Carefully designed for real-life inspections, it helps radio surveyors save time, avoid errors, and stay productive on board.

Take a closer look — in this post, we’re showing what it can do. 👀

🚢🌎 To all who sail and support: Happy Day of the Seafarer!

The 2025 theme reminds us that safety at sea means more than just working systems — it means dignity, respect, and zero tolerance for harassment.

We’re proud to support maritime professionals by helping ensure their communications and distress systems are reliable and compliant — because feeling safe starts with being heard.

What makes a good GMDSS&AIS inspection?
Equipment? Training? Procedures? All important, of course. But more than anything — experience.

In our new blog article by Victor Panov, who spent several years working as a radio surveyor, you’ll find practical lessons learned from the field — shared in an insightful and accessible way, especially for those just getting started in marine radio inspections.

As Victor puts it: “Field experience shows that it’s attention to detail that truly defines the quality of a radio inspection.”

📖 A helpful read for newcomers — and we warmly invite experienced surveyors to join the discussion and share their own insights in the comments below: https://gmdsstesters.com/radio-survey/general/practical-insights-from-gmdss-ais-surveys-lessons-from-the-field.html

You know the MRTS-7M as a lightweight, travel-friendly tester with solid measurement accuracy and broad testing capabilities.
But there’s more behind its design — features that stay in the background, yet make everyday work easier and help ensure inspections are reliable and standards-compliant.
Let’s highlight a few design choices that quietly make a big difference.

🔷 ONE RF IN/OUT — SIMPLE. RELIABLE. EFFICIENT.
With a single RF connector, the MRTS-7M keeps things straightforward: no confusion, no extra cables, no room for error.
Built for fast, accurate work in real-world conditions — onboard or offshore.

🔷 DIRECT CABLE CONNECTION — PRECISE, COMPLIANT MEASUREMENTS
When verifying signal parameters like frequency or output power, precision is critical.
Antenna-based testing offers only rough estimates. That’s why the MRTS-7M supports direct cable connection via power sensor or attenuator — for accurate, standards-compliant readings.

🔷 TRANSMITTING & RECEIVING — YOU NEED BOTH
GMDSS marine radios and AIS stations transmit and receive — and your tester should do the same.
The MRTS-7M is equipped with both a transmitter and a receiver, allowing you to verify the transmission and reception functions of the equipment — including their key signal parameters — in accordance with IMO and other regulatory requirements.

🔷 BUILT-IN BATTERY — TRUE MOBILITY
The MRTS-7M runs on its internal battery. No external power, no extra cables — just switch it on and start testing, wherever the inspection takes you.

Designed with real users and real conditions in mind.

Ensuring that your tester serves you reliably for years — needing only routine calibration, not costly repairs — is a shared goal for both users and the manufacturer.
Today’s post, inspired by our service technicians, offers practical tips to help you avoid some common mistakes. Even if you're already familiar with them, let this serve as a friendly reminder!

🚫 NO MORE BURNT RESISTORS: WHAT GOES WRONG?
Every now and then, we receive MRTS-7M testers for calibration or service... and find burned resistors inside. In most cases, the cause is the same: the tester was connected directly to the RF port of a transmitting station — without using a power sensor or attenuator.

Here’s how it typically happens:
1) An engineer connects the MRTS-7M directly to a VHF or AIS station to test its receiver.
2) The station replies — sending a powerful signal back.
3) Without proper protection, that return signal overloads the tester’s input — sometimes causing serious, permanent damage.

The result?
🛠️ Burned components, unexpected downtime, and preventable repair costs.

⚠️ If the MRTS-7M tester has stopped receiving messages from the tested devices normally, perform a quick fault diagnosis: measure the resistance of the RF In/Out connector of the tester between the central contact and the housing with the tester powered off. The resistance should be 433 ohms. If the value differs, servicing may be required.

✅ HOW TO KEEP YOUR TESTER SAFE:
✔️ Always double-check your connections: follow the manual. Direct connection to the antenna of a transmitting station is rarely allowed — only for specific tests like NAVTEX.
✔️ Use a power sensor or an attenuator whenever needed — these units protect your equipment.
✔️ Keep your tester in proper storage conditions, avoiding excessive humidity, which can lead to oxidation of internal components over time. If the tester has been stored in a high-humidity environment, allow it to acclimate in its packaging at normal room conditions for at least 12 hours before switching it on.

The MRTS-7M is a powerful tool — but like any precision instrument, it’s not indestructible. Handle it with care, and it will repay you with impeccable performance on board.
