🚜🇬🇷 Greek farmers have blocked major national roads with their tractors, effectively cutting the country in half along its main north–south transport axis. They are protesting against rising production costs, low purchase prices, and delays in the payment of state subsidies, Euronews reported.

The blockade comes shortly after dozens of people were arrested last week in a growing scandal involving agricultural subsidy fraud, which revealed that millions of euros had been illegally paid out through OPEKEPE, the agency responsible for distributing EU funds.

The scandal has enraged farmers and prompted increased scrutiny of Greece’s subsidy payment system.

According to data from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), the preliminary investigation showed that 324 individuals received a total of €19.6 million in illegal subsidies.

🚜🚜🚜 About 10,000 farmers from across the EU will protest in Brussels on 18 December against what they see as the European Commission’s increasingly unrealistic and harmful agricultural policies.

Copa-Cogeca, which organizes the protest, warns that the lack of progress on CAP reform, excessive bureaucracy, and trade deals like EU-Mercosur are pushing farmers to a breaking point.

The demonstration comes just before Ursula von der Leyen’s trip to Brazil to advance the Mercosur agreement and ahead of an EU summit on the future budget. Around 40 farming organizations aim to deliver a strong, united message to the Commission.
