Elements of the schwere Panzerjäger Abteilung 519 (s.Pz.Jg.Abt.519) supporting the infantry:

In the foreground, the Nashorn (Hornisse) tank destroyer, codenamed "Brandenburg."

The report depicts the Battle of Witebsk, notably featuring heavy armored elements such as the Panzer VI Tiger of a heavy tank battalion (possibly the 505th Heavy Tank Destroyer Battalion) and the Nashorn (Sd.kfz.164) of the 519th Heavy Tank Destroyer Battalion (S.Pz.Jg.Abt.519, 519th Heavy Tank Destroyer Battalion).

Half-tracked vehicles (Sd.kfz.10/4) equipped with 2 cm Flak 38 guns (PK697 F791 L10 to L12). The Nashorn, named Brandenburg, advances in support of the infantry. A second Nashorn is present, but its name is not visible.

Note: Engaged east of Witebsk, the schwere Panzerjäger Abteilung 519 destroyed 290 vehicles (between 20/12/1944 and 22/02/1944) for 6 losses, including 4 scuttled units.

In 1922, thirteen Rolls-Royce armoured cars, armed with Vickers .303 machine guns, were handed over to the Irish National Army by the British government during the Irish Civil War. They remained in service until March 1947.

On April 28 1954, twelve were sold, less their turrets and armoured plate, at a public auction at McKee Barracks for winning bids ranging from £27 to £60. One was retained to be kept as a museum piece.

That vehicle was chosen as worthy for preservation by the Irish Secretary of the Department of Defence as it was believed to be the actual Rolls-Royce that accompanied General Michael Collins's convoy on August 22, 1922, when he was killed in an ambush instigated by the IRA at Béal na mBláth in West Cork.

Collins was at the time of his death, was the Commander-in-Chief of the pro-treaty forces, which became the new Irish National Army. It is normally on display in the Curragh Military Museum and used for ceremonial purposes.

These unarmoured Jagdpanthers were used in testing out 6.5-inch HESH rounds in a similar way to the Tiger 2 tanks seen in previous posts.

The Jagdpanthers had a further 3 inches of steel armour cemented to the front of them but despite this proved no match for the large HESH rounds demonstrating that a spaced layer was needed to make a vehicle immune to that ammunition type and that due to the direct contact between the outer and inner plate the shockwave was still able to propagate the armour.
