are with multiple functions that wrap around endothelial cells in the smallest vessels of the body, namely in arterioles, capillaries, and venules. Pericytes are provided with multiple finger-like protrusions from their cytoplasm to surround endothelial cells.
✅ Pericytes are surrounded by a basement membrane that hosts contact structures with endothelial cells, allowing constant communication between both cell types. Through this close communication and thanks to a degree of the contractile function displayed by pericytes in certain tissues, they can regulate the capillary diameter.
In addition, pericytes are involved in the creation and remodeling of blood vessels.
✅ The highest pericyte coverage around microvessels is found in the central nervous system where pericytes perform an essential role by participating in blood vessel formation, maintaining the blood-brain barrier, regulating the entry of immune cells, and controlling brain blood flow.

are tiny cell fragments found in the blood and spleen. They can also be called , from Greek θρόμβος, “clot” and κύτος, “cell”. 🔎 Platelets have no cell nucleus: they are fragments of cytoplasm that are derived from the megakaryocytes of the bone marrow. 💪 Their key function is to help form blood clots to slow or stop bleeding and to help wounds heal.
⚖ For diagnosing certain diseases and conditions, it’s key to check that the number of platelets in the blood is neither too high nor too low.

🔬 Platelets are increasingly being recognized for promoting tumor growth and metastasis. As they pass through the bloodstream, they participate in the formation of tumor cell aggregates by means of the actions of different proteins, increasing the tumor’s metastatic potential.

The word MACROPHAGE comes from Ancient Greek and literally means ‘large eater’. This definition perfectly captures the devouring nature of this cell, whose mission is to engulf and kill pathogens.

🔬 In addition, macrophages play a key role in immunity, as they secrete a variety of modulator substances and are professional antigen-presenting cells. There’s a wide variety of macrophages, each population being specialized in the environment of a certain tissue. Alveolar macrophages (lung), kupffer cells (liver) and microglia (brain) are just some of the many existing types of macrophages.

🔎 In the initial stages of tumor formation, most of macrophages are type M1, which promote the anti-tumor immune response. Macrophages phagocytize the apoptotic bodies and other cellular debris of tumor cells, internalizing tumor antigens, which are after processed and presented to cytototoxic cells. They also secrete cytokines, which are key proteins in the inflammatory response.

, or cardiac muscle cells, are the most abundant of the . They are in charge of generating contractile force in this organ. For this purpose, the cardiomyocytes' cytoplasm is filled with specialized organelles called myofibrils, which possess the capacity of shortening and lengthening, enabling the global contractile movement of the beating heart.

🔀 Each myofibril contains a series of sarcomeres, the fundamental contractile units of cardiomyocytes, composed of long filaments of fibrous proteins that slide past each other during the muscle contraction.

🔀 Cardiomyocytes undergo continuous cycles of contraction-relaxation, regulated by increases and decreases in intracellular Ca2+.

🔀 Between cardiomyocytes, specialized junctions called intercalated discs allow for the circulation of ions and the fast propagation of depolarization and repolarization along the myocardium. In this way, all cardiomyocytes contract in unison and create the of the .
