This Single Dive was so action packed that I decided to make a video eight minutes long. There’s no other way! The whole reef was out to party. They must’ve been on some drugs or something! Because everybody was out and about and they didn’t care if I filmed them not to mention, I found my first day Octopus on the reef! The only place I’ve seen these is other countries so it is very cool! #🐙 Alex Borsutzky Salty Locs

Meet The Paralyzer, the pole spear I was using for lionfish hunting back then.

Short, maneuverable around the reef, and fitted with a paralyzer tip to help hold onto one of the slipperiest little targets out there.

It’s funny looking back at old footage like this because the mission hasn’t really changed…

…but the arsenal definitely has. 🧜🏽‍♀️

From The Paralyzer to the Lionator…and the 6-foot Gatku affectionately known as “The Long Arm of the Law.”

A few years, a whole lot of dives, and a LOT of lionfish later. 😏

Hunter be hunting! 😂
Congratulations! 🧜🏽‍♀️

Congratulations to Hunter Ledbetter on earning the title of Veteran Champion in the 2026 FWC Lionfish Challenge! Hunter headed out on 40 hunting trips to remove 1,541 lionfish from Florida waters. Hunter is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and will be taking home an amazing trophy and prize package from Oasis Wildlife Artistry!

Lionfish hunting is less about covering more reef… and more about knowing where to look. 👀

Under ledges. Inside crevices. Pressed against rock. Hanging upside down in the shadows.

They are masters at using structure, color and low light to disappear right in front of you.

The more I hunt them, the more I realize success comes down to slowing down and really reading the reef.

So here’s the tip:
Don’t just look across the reef.
Look INTO it. 🔦

Sometimes all you’ll get is a stripe, the edge of a fin, or a shadow that looks just a little too suspicious.
And when you see it… don’t blink. 😂

Way to slay Helen!! 🧜🏽‍♀️

Congratulations to Helen Rodney for earning the title of Lionfish Queen during the 2026 FWC Lionfish Challenge! Helen embarked on 42 lionfish hunting trips to successfully remove 1,488 lionfish from Florida waters!

The 13 dorsal spines get most of the attention because they’re hard to miss.

The other 5? Not so much.

Look closely underneath a lionfish and you’ll find 3 venomous spines associated with the a**l fin and 1 at the start of each pelvic fin. Move the surrounding fin tissue out of the way and you can see just how sharp they actually are.

13 dorsal + 3 a**l + 2 pelvic = 18 venomous spines.
Knowing where ALL of them are is important if you’re going to handle or clean lionfish.

Did you know those bottom five were there? 👀
