WILLEMSTAD –Curacao
In the first eight months of 2025 Curaçao has welcomed more than 1.1 million passengers. This is stated in the August report of the hotel association CHATA. The growth is especially due to more cruise passengers and tourists staying only one day.
In August the number of visitors increased by more than 23 percent to just over 115,000 people. Cruise passengers provided the highest increase: With 51,000 visitors, almost 59 percent more than last August. The number of tourists staying overnight also grew by just over four percent to more than 60,000 people.

En los primeros ocho meses de 2025, Curaçao recibió a más de 1,1 millones de pasajeros. Así lo indica el informe de agosto de la asociación hotelera CHATA. Este crecimiento se debe principalmente al aumento de cruceristas y turistas con estancias de un solo día.
En agosto, el número de visitantes aumentó más del 23 %, alcanzando poco más de 115.000 personas. Los cruceristas registraron el mayor aumento: 51.000 visitantes, casi un 59 % más que en agosto del año anterior. El número de turistas que pernoctaron también aumentó algo más del 4 %, superando las 60.000 personas.

KRALENDIJK –Bonaire
Roxanne-Liana Francisca has been appointed as new program director of the World Nature Fund (WWF-NL) in the Caribbean area. With its arrival the organization expands its focus: alongside the Dutch Caribbean WWF-NL is going to make a stronger effort for cooperation in the wider region.
WWF-NL has been working since 1960 on the protection of nature in the Dutch Caribbean, with projects related to climate-resilient coastal ecosystems and the maintenance of iconic marine animals such as sea turtles, sharks and whales. Because the threats transcend land borders, the organization wants to link the knowledge and experience of WWF's regional offices – including in Colombia, Belize and Suriname – to the islands and the network worldwide. Francisca is tasked with bringing the groups into contact with each other.

Roxanne-Liana Francisca ha sido nombrada nueva directora de programas del Fondo Mundial para la Naturaleza (WWF-NL) en el Caribe. Con su llegada, la organización amplía su enfoque: junto con el Caribe Holandés, WWF-NL intensificará sus esfuerzos de cooperación en toda la región.
WWF-NL trabaja desde 1960 en la protección de la naturaleza en el Caribe Holandés, con proyectos relacionados con ecosistemas costeros resilientes al clima y el mantenimiento de animales marinos emblemáticos como tortugas marinas, tiburones y ballenas. Dado que las amenazas trascienden las fronteras terrestres, la organización busca conectar el conocimiento y la experiencia de las oficinas regionales de WWF, incluidas las de Colombia, Belice y Surinam, con las islas y la red mundial. Francisca se encargará de conectar a los grupos entre sí.

ORANJESTAD - October 10th marks the fifteenth anniversary of the significant revision of the Charter for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Curaçao and Sint Maarten became autonomous countries, while Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba became special municipalities. Aruba had already had a separate status since 1986.
Editorial Commentary
Fifteen years later, the Dutch government reflects in a position paper on the 70th anniversary of the Charter. Reading this document through a Caribbean lens, it's hard to come to any other conclusion than that autonomy within the Kingdom remains largely an illusion, including for Aruba.

El 10 de octubre se conmemora el decimoquinto aniversario de la importante revisión de la Carta del Reino de los Países Bajos. Curazao y Sint Maarten se convirtieron en países autónomos, mientras que Bonaire, San Eustaquio y Saba se convirtieron en municipios especiales. Aruba ya contaba con un estatus independiente desde 1986.

Quince años después, el gobierno neerlandés reflexiona en un documento de posición sobre el 70.º aniversario de la Carta. Al leer este documento desde una perspectiva caribeña, es difícil llegar a otra conclusión que la de que la autonomía dentro del Reino sigue siendo en gran medida una ilusión, incluso para Aruba.

THE BOTTOM, Saba
A study executed by the experts of the company Deltares, commissioned by the Public Entity Saba, reveals that groundwater is the main route by which nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus reach the island’s coastal waters.
This influx, largely from wastewater in cesspits, poses risks to Saba’s fragile coral reefs, which are highly sensitive to excessive nutrient levels.

Un estudio realizado por los expertos de la empresa Deltares, encargado por la Entidad Pública Saba, revela que las aguas subterráneas son la principal vía por la que nutrientes como el nitrógeno y el fósforo llegan a las aguas costeras de la isla.
Esta afluencia, procedente principalmente de aguas residuales de pozos negros, supone un riesgo para los frágiles arrecifes de coral de Saba, muy sensibles a los niveles excesivos de nutrientes.
